HELP! SETI RIG DOWN: It happend again

My seti rig is down.

The computer beeps a BIOS warning when I turn it on. The warning is that no RAM is installed or detected. It is installed however. The warning 1st happened with my computer in sleep mode when I wasn't there. My roomates turned it off. Since then I can't get it started.

I tried taking out and putting the RAM back in.

Specs:
1.33 Athlon T-bird
256 MB DDR RAM (I purchased this from Crucial.com, it has worked for about 5 months)
ASUS A7M266 (I think) motherboard
A-open 12X DVD
A-open 12x10x32x CD burner
Soundblaster Live:Value
Geforce 2 pro
Netgear Ethernet card
and a 3.5 floppy (I've forgotten the model)
40 GB hard drive (again I've forgotten)

I was putting out about 5 WUs a day before this happened any ideas to get me back up and running
 
Have you tried going into the BIOS and resetting the config to the defaults and then going back to what you normally use? Maybe someone thought they'd do some tweaking?

I had a similar experience about a week ago with an ASUS A7V, 1.0GHz Athlon and some Crucial PC133 ECC RAM (RAM originally for my Gateway 6400 server). Anyway, I got the BIOS beeps that no memory was found but I found if I kept power cycling or resetting, it would eventually boot. A new heatsink/fan arrived and I put those in, reset the BIOS, tweaked back to what I wanted and the problem has not yet returned. <crossing fingers> 🙂
 
Also,

I've never had problems with heat. With SETI on high I am below 50 C. So why would a heatsink/fan be the problem?
 
Oh, I was just giving the details of my whole situation. I got the new heatsink/fan to keep the temps down (still kinda high but I am now o/c at least...never could before, reliably).
 
If that happens again try removing and reseating cables, cards, CPU, RAM, etc. If that doesn't solve it try clearing the CMOS. There should be a jumper that you close that will reset your CMOS to defaults.

it happened again.

i have tried a few times conjur's method of continually resetting, but it doesn't work. This time is happened while i was using the comp. It just died, then I hit reset and got the beeps again.

when I get back to my dorm I'll try using the other slot for my RAM, but I don't have time to redo everything in my system. If this keeps up for much longer I may try getting RAM from elsewhere and trying that.

Doesn't matter. A new stick will work fine. Crucial is among the most reliable manufacturers of RAM. You just wrecked a stick, you can do that with any brand.
 
Yep. Try the different slot, and if still no go, it definitely sounds like you have a bad stick of memory. Just to make absolutely sure, do you have a friend with a comp that uses or accepts DDR RAM? If so, see if they will let you swap out their mem sticks for yours and boot up. I suspect it will fail. If it does, then you may have a bad MB.
 
thanks i'll go try that now, I haven't been back to my dorm yet but I am leaving now, hopefully my next post will be from my machine but we'll see
 
I wouldn't toss that stick yet, maybe it's just seated badly. Yes, I know I was the one that put the RAM in and you could probably blame me, but I counter that you probably abused it moving it around. Just take it out and put it back in, and next time refrain from shaking your case like crazy.

it still isn't up,

the RAM doesn't work in either slot. I'm going to see if I can get crucial to honor the warranty and get another stick. Hopefully that will solve the problem
