A fundraiser is underway to save scientist Nikola Tesla's old laboratory, named Wardenclyffe, and to turn the site into a museum. The fundraising is spearheaded by Matthew Inman, creator of the webcomic site The Oatmeal. The property has been embattled for years between its owner, the Agfa Corporation, and the nonprofit organization that wants to save it and enter it in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Oatmeal is my new favourite internet personality. Not as if I didn't like him before.

America does need a Tesla museum, considering the whole modern age is thanks to his inventions. Edison gets way too much credit for his accomplishments. Many of which were just improvements on things that already existed, and much of the work was done by his lab techs.

Tesla was awesome. Some of his discoveries are top secret to this day. He really knew his stuff and I can't help but imagine how the world would be different if these publications had not been hidden away.

Either that, or you didn't read the Oatmeal link above. That gives a nice overview. I'll post it again for you...

Yep. The whole modern world runs on his inventions. Edison gets far too much credit for "his" inventions. He's like the old timey Steve Jobs. He took things that already existed and improved them slightly, or came up with ideas and got his team working on them, then claimed the patents for himself. Edison was a notorious patent troll. Read up on his Motion Picture Patent Company. It almost killed cinema in it's early days. Interestingly, the big studios were born from piracy and patent violation as they fought against the MPPC. Universal Pictures is one of them.

It's great that the Oatmeal's campaign was a success.

Holy crap, I never would have thought of comparing Thomas Edison to Steve Jobs, but it's so true!

Glad to hear they managed to save Tesla's lab. I still need to build a tesla coil one of these days. I saw a CRT TV on the side of the street the other day, free for the taking. I should have grabbed it. Some nice capacitors and transformer in those.
