my dad accidentally updated his ipad1 recently to 5.1.1
now, its dirt slow and crash frequently in safari. it was working perfectly fine before all of this mess. is there a reliable link i can use to downgrade? he didnt have a BLOB nor jailbrake his ipad. i hate to brick his ipad. and it would really suck just to buy another tablet cause he cant surf news sites as before. 1 thing is for sure, it wont be an apple tablet!

That's a 4 1/2 year old tablet - I'm kind of amazed it worked at all.

Did you do all the normal troubleshooting stuff like factory restore / hard resets / delete all content & settings ?

Downgrading isn't an option.

Before you get all nerdragey and go buy a non-apple tablet, find out how many apps and itunes purchases you're going to have to buy. Then get him a used retina Mini.

Indeed. The only way to pull off a downgrade on an iPad 1 (Apple A4) device is by using saved SHSH blobs to trick the device, and if you had those blobs you wouldn't be here (generally only jailbreakers have them).

he didnt buy anything for the ipad. he just reads news/emails. so we're not loosing anything except the ipad1.

They want you to buy a new one... not that I agree with that practice. Also it makes it a bit easier on the devs.

You could probably sell it for say $75, or $100 if you're lucky.

Then in October, pick up a new iPad Air 2 (or iPad 4?) for him, or else a Nexus 10 when the new version comes out or something like that.

I'm guessing he won't like the Nexus 7 or iPad mini Retina or other 7-8" tablets, but you can ask.

I have several Apple devices and I think you're absolutely correct. It's a damned shame they do that.

I think its to prevent people from jailbreaking, but has the nice side effect of pushing folks to an upgrade. That being said, it IS a first gen tablet, not sure what you would expect from it.

Exactly what the OP said, web browsing and reading newspaper articles.

I think it's a pretty dick move on Apple's part not to allow downgrades, especially if it is proven that the new iOS versions degrade performance on older tablets.
