help remembering name of movie

i cant seem to remember the name of this move or the acters in it. heres a bunch of specifics i recall from it:
i remember it was about some kind of (time travel) machine that had huge spinning circles around it. at the end of the movie the machine worked a i think the woman in the movie traveled space and spoke to an alien in a human form (talked about an invasion maybe), then came back when accually she was in the wheel for a second but felt like months.

Good movie.
 
I think I got Contact free when I got my 1st DVD player in '99. It's been a while since I saw it, but I think I remember liking the film. Similar to Stargate, wasn't it?
