Short story: the screen on my Dell Inspiron 510m has gone black.

After googling around and read for days, I came to the conclusion it must be due to an defect inverter. The different symptoms matches: no status light, desktop just about visible under a bright light, works with external monitor, and so on.

I know you cannot buy it from Dell, nor have I any interest doing that. I've been seaching for it at online auctions, and found several.

Now to my question: how do I know which inverter to buy? I mean, I can imagine there must be different models for different screens. Do I need to open my laptop, or do any of the model/serial numbers on the bottom tell me so?

Look at your current inverter and find the input and output specs. Usually printed on the inverter box itself.

Thanks for your reply.

Sorry for asking dumb, are you saying I need to open my laptop to read the specs?
In case so, if there are other ways, I prefer those, since I don't have a clue howto disassemble it.

Hhmm, good question, I assume it's placed right below the display or attached on the back to it. Googling around for pictures, it seems to be the default.

Thanks for your replies. Didn't come closer figuring out what inverter model I need. Ordered one for cheap money though, so fingers crossed.
