Help recommend me an area in north San Deigo County

I'll be moving in the end of April to San Diego for a new job and I need recommendations on where to live or what cities to avoid. The only thing I know about San Diego is that Shamu lives there. 🙂 The job is located at the Ranch Bernardo area. Here are some preferences:

* I prefer North SD
* Within a 30 min commute
* Easy access to the freeways and restaurants particularly Asian food
* Safe
* 1bed room apartment no more than $1200. Although I'm looking for rooms to rent to instead

How is the SD traffic compared to Orange County? The Ranch Bernardo area seems really nice but it's probably out of budget though.

Thanks in advance!

I keep reading the thread title... over and over... and it still makes no sense.

I liked Encinitas. Others seem to think it's a dump. Was only there for a few days though so maybe it grows off you.

OP, whereabouts is your job located? I currently live in the University City area and find it a great place to live. 1br are about that price range. What ever you do, stay the hell out of City Heights if you value your life.

I exit West Bernardo Center drive off of the 15.

Carmel Valley / Del Mar is nice, though I'm not sure how the rent situation is nowadays - it's an expensive area. CA-56 straight to work, or Carmel Valley Rd. if you prefer the back roads - traffic should be fine on this commute. Asian food isn't particularly close though. Most of it is centered around Clairemont Mesa Blvd and Convoy St., which is a good 10 miles south on 805, but that area definitely isn't nearly as nice as Carmel Valley.

Actually, Rancho Bernardo / Poway is already nice, and you could just live close to work. The weather tends to be a little bit better on the I-5 side of North County though, and you'll be closer to the beach.

Yep, Escondido. Not the greatest of North County cities but its turning around and pretty much suits your needs. Living is affordable, close to the 15 and is only about 15-20 minutes to RB. The only downside is depending on work hours you'll be with the traffic, but it'd probably only be a slight inconvenience in the morning and it starts to break up a little better after RB on the way home.

edit: As far as Asian food goes you should have no problem no matter where you live, but if its that big of a deal to you Mira Mesa is another 10 minutes south of RB and should take care of that. But I've found great Japanese/Chinese/Malay/Thai/Korean food up and down the 78.
