Agreed on both points.

That and the whole Star Wars franchise died when GL brought out the prequels, not that the originals were that amazing to begin with.

If that doesn't call for a lifetime ban, I don't know what does.

Shoot me I'm not of that generation. I agree that they are FAR and away the best Sci-Fi movies of their time and still hold up over the years. Those who saw them when they first came out had them burned into their mind and I respect that. But that's not me. If I had to pick an older Sci-Fi movie I love it would have to be Blade Runner. Which come to think of it is another one to add to the list.

Gladiator?

Black Hawk Down?

Amazon says they're coming, so I'm not sure. Also, if I recall, most blu ray drives will also play HD.

Still into the HT seen? I remember last time you told me you had quite the set up on a college budget which would put you in a similar position as me :)

Yes, in fact I'm often in the AV&HT area...

I'm not familiar with your model to know if it's well calibrated on one of its factory setting picture modes, but I would suggest getting a calibration disc like this one.

Damn will definitely be on the list thanks. Forgot about this series. Seen most of them but I agree the quality is amazing.

I always like to mention that Galapagos has better HD quality than PE. Far more consistent. Great program, too.

Anyhoo, you're getting a plasma so be sure you put it through the weaning period of 30-50 hours before you go crazy with HD material.

check out AVSforums for details on new plasma ownership.

I debated getting this or the 50" Panasonic pz800U. The Panasonic is extremely well calibrated in it's THX mode and is the all round better set. I demoed both the Samsung and the Panasonic in store with my own material and I will attest that the Panasonic is better. However I have already been looking at a 50" screen for 5 or 6 years and I just couldn't ignore the size difference of the Samsung. I've looked at enough reviews to know and from my own viewing know that it's not the best but it can hold it's own against some of the better units out there. Here is HT Mags review of the 50":

Conclusions
From the evidence of three recent Samsungs I have reviewed (two plasmas and the 81 Series LCD with local dimming), it seems clear that the company is putting most of its black-level eggs into the LCD basket. That?s probably a good bet, since LCDs are now significantly outselling plasmas.

In this respect, Samsung is in direct opposition to Pioneer, which has championed great plasma black levels. I compared this Samsung side by side with a Pioneer Elite PRO-110FD plasma, which will be replaced by a new model by the time you read this, or shortly after. The Pioneer was just a hair sharper, although I never would have guessed it without a direct comparison. But the biggest difference was in the blacks. It was no contest there, with the Pioneer winning that race.

It?s no contest in price, either. The Pioneer is more than twice the Samsung?s price. With superb resolution, excellent color, uniquely useful color adjustments, and first-rate video processing, the Samsung PN50A550 offers a good bang for your buck.

Blade Runner is great on BD.

Empire is great Sci-Fi though. the first episode is passable, and I really like Jedi. Yes, I grew up with those movies, and yes, I've come to realize as I age that they are clearly not as great as I once thought they were (film-wise). Still like 'em, though. The prequals don't dilute it for me; I simply discount them.

Gladiator is not on BD.

BHD has been out for quite a while now, and looks pretty damn good. Sound is even better.

Planet Earth
Wall-E
Pirates of the Caribbean: 1-3 (2 and 3 are best)

Best all around (picture and sound) - Band of Brothers - take a saturday and watch the whole series...unbelievable! If you don't have a decent surround sound (HDMI/TrueHD/Etc) then you will not really appreciate the full BluRay experience.

Yes I need to research breaking it in and calibration. I know SD content will look horrible on this set but I plan to watch a fair amount of SD content anyway (I don't mind the quality).

Part of the 10,000 bucks I spent over the past 4 years I mentioned above included $1000 for speakers. They aren't the very best but they can hold their own and sound very nice in the small room. They are Paradigm Cinema Speakers:

The Dark Knight

Seen it too recently and I hear the Blu-Ray transfer was one of the worst.
The IMAX filmed segments look good, the rest....don't.

well, compared to the DVD, the BD is probably better, though the 35mm sequences (80% of the film) that were used for the IMAX presentation were filtered to all hell so they wouldn't stand out as much in the IMAX theaters. This is the version that was used for BD, so that filtering is inherent in the stock, supposedly.

I do believe the version transferred to DVD is the normal theatrical release (maintains 2.35:1 AR throughout), and so technically, shouldn't have all of that same filtering applied. But for whatever reason, it has been reported to look absolutely dreadful.

I don't mind TDK on my 42" Plasma. I could barely tolerate it on my bro's 52" LCD. Your mileage may vary, of course... ;)

Had I never found AVSforums (regardless of the TDK thread), I probably would have never started noticing the things I now notice. Though, simply spending enough hours with BD will really sour your taste to SD. I find many DVDs unwatchable now :(
