Help putting system together

Ok, this is my first time building a computer from different parts. So, I have a few questions.

1)I have a dvd rom, and cd burner. Can I connect both with 1 ribbon cable and plug the end into the mobo?
2)Does it matter which of the 2 jumpers i plug it into?
3)The mobo already has onboard audio, how do I turn that off since I'm gettin the s.b. live!mp3

I've never had a DVD drive. But i'd suggest you plug both on the same IDE cable into the secondary IDE connector.
Reserve the primary one for your harddisks. Check your motherboard manual for the info or take a torch and shine it, it's usually labelled.

You'd turn off the onboard sound probably through an option in your bios or perhaps a jumper on the MB. Again, check your motherboard manual.

Pri IDE 1: HDD
Sec IDE 1: None

Pri IDE 2: DVD
Sec IDE 2: CD-RW

You have to set the jumpers on the drive to what you want it to be, I would recommmend primary for the dvd and secondary for the cdrw

You can normally turn it off in the BIOS, if not, just disable in the System Properties

I'd give the two optical drives their own cables, and put the HD on a Promise or Iwill UDMA 66 controller card.

But that's me....

Ahh.. we're in the same boat. I'm building my first as well. Anyhow, AMB's suggestions sounds good.. but perhaps a bit confusing (no offense amb). on your mobo, u have 2 ide controllers, primary and secondary... and each connecting ide ribbon handles both a master and a slave. always always put your hard drive as primary master. i would recommend placing the the dvd as a secondary master, and cdrw as secondary slave. now make sure ur drives are jumpered as such. so.. something like this:

primary ide:
master - hard drive
slave -

secondary ide:
master - cd/dvd
slave - cdrw

as for your sound card.. simply disable it in your device manager. good luck! =)
