System Specs:
Abit AT7-MAX2 Mobo
Running latest BIOS (DD)
AMD Athlon 2600+ @ 2.13 GHz
1 GB Kingston DDR333 RAM
2x Western Digital "Special Edition" 80GB 7200RPM (8MB Cache) on RAID-0 Array
PNY Verto 4400 (GF4 Ti 4400)
Running WinXP Detonators:
Version: 45.23 Release Date: August 13, 2003 WHQL Certified
WinXP SP1 /w all pertinent Windows Updates installed.
The Problem:
I have been trying to watch some of the High Definition trailers for Windows Media Player 9 (link) to no avail. The video does play, but it drops frames something horrible. On WMP9, the sound is fine, but the video is garbage. I downloaded Zoom Player (link), and the video is better, but the audio drops out.
I went into Display Properties > Advanced > GeForce4 Ti 4400 Properties > Performance & Quality Settings - and changed Image Settings from "High Quality" to "High Performance." That helped a bit, but the video is still unwatchable.
I tried changing the priority of WMP to "High" through processes, and then to "Real Time." That also improved it a little, but I'm still dropping ~50% of the frames. Even with WMP set on "Normal" priority, my CPU usage spikes from 0-1% to 100% on viewing the video.
I'm running a clean system; I keep nothing in msconfig or startup. So, no worry of any other programs hogging the CPU.
If anyone has any ideas/suggestions as to why I can't watch these trailers or how I may be able to correct the problem, please let me know. I exceed the hardware requirements to view them, so it's gotta be a software problem somewhere.
Thanks in advance.
