Help printing good 4x6 photos on HP printers!

I have a DeskJet 722C and a DeskJet 3820. I'd like to use the 722 to print some photos for my mom on this 4x6 inkjet photo paper. The problem is, when I have to select paper size, the closest I can select is a 4x6 index card, and this definition or template or whatever appears to add a big white border to the end (the right side) of the picture. This won't do at all.

The directions (it's HP photo paper) say to select " 'Photo 4x6 in. (with tab)' or 'Borderless Photo 4x6 in. (with tab)' ". Of course, I can't choose those. If I could, would it eliminate the empty space I get with the 4x6 index card setting? Is there any way to add these definitions to my printer software? Or is there some trick I can do to get the photos to print properly?

Thanks for reading. I know it seems like a n00b problem, but it's stumping me.

Jackhamr, do you have any idea of my 3820 supports it? I don't mind the small borders, but the fact that it leaves a good half inch (not counting the perforated tab, obviously) on the end is frustrating. That eats a lot of the picture, because I'm printing from 4x6 digital documents, unscaled to fit the bordered dimensions.

AMD, will do. In fact, I'll DL the driver from HP just to make sure it's the newest.

Some printers have a huge border. Especially the older ones. Is just saw that the 722 was released way back in 1999 which was long before digital photography was even on the radar screen. I'd bet that the behavior your seeing is correct behavior and is all the 722c is capable of. You'd need something much newer to do what you want.

hey,

i have a new psc 2175 printer and the same issue. Borders.

The funny thing is that all my pictures i take with my Canon S230 (and i guess with most other cams too!) come at an 1.333 aspect (4:3) ratio off them cam.
Eg 1600x1200 or 2048x1536 etc...is all 4:3 !

Now.....a 6x4 photo has an aspect ratio of 1.5 !!!!!! No matter what 6x4 paper type you select...if you select 'fit image to fit the paper' there will ALWAYS be a border because the two aspect ratios (photo/cam resolution and paper size !) dont match ! This is something which strikes me as totally odd !

The workaround here is that you have to use an imaging program like PaintShop or PhotoShop and resize the canvas a bit.....means you have to cut off a few pixels at the top and the bottom of the picture so the picture gets a 1.5 (6/4) ratio. Downside is you lose SOME picture information - but then while printing you can 'fit' the image to the photo paper size without a border.

Eg: Orignal pics 2048x1536.
Go to Photoshop and select Image ->Canvas Size and as value for height [i leave the width as it is] enter 1365 [instead of 1536]
(Because 2048 / 1.5 = 1365)
PhotoShop then takes a bit off the top and bottom....but should be ok and the pic is in 6x4 format
You now can print the pic and fit on a 6x4 and there *should* be no border !

That's at least the only solution came up with for that problem....tell me if it works......if anyone knows another workaround let us know too 🙂

Yeah, I've cropped and resized the pics to be 4x6 in Photoshop. That's good advice, though. My camera happens to have a 1.5 aspect ratio mode, but I never use it, because I mostly use the images online and such. The printer just eats half an inch of picture.

I'm going to try it on the 3820... Too bad it's actually harder to use to print small pages on than the old 722.
