Help!:Popups when no browser is open

I've got a friend who is complaining about gettting popups when he's playing Everquest with nothing else open, so he says.

He used to run Groxter(sp?), Gator, and the whole Real Media suite, but I had him uninstall all those.

I've had him run spy-bot and ad-aware, but he's still getting them.

I'm thinking about having him do a reformat, but before I do I thought I'd ask here. Any Ideas?
 
The problem is not spyware. It is instead a windows "feature" called windows messenger (not to be confused with MSN Messenger). You can disable it by following these instructions.
