Help; pop-ups are killing me.

The pop-ups I'm taking about are in a grey box and at the top it says "messenger service." They seem to appear randomly, rather than at specific websites. One is from NetPopUp but I don't remember the rest. I used Popup stopper but it doesn't work, and Adware 6.0 doesn't detect anything unusual in the registry. Anybody have experience w/ these pop-ups? I'm using win xp and internet explorer 6.0 if that helps. Thanks.

My only advice is to either try Google Toolbar (people seem to have success with that), an ie variant (like MyIE2, Avant, etc.) or try a new browser (Mozilla/Firebird, Opera et. al.). My personal preference is for the last option, but that's completely up to you.

Thanks for the replies. Under options, the "open when windows starts" is not checked. Is there a different way to disable it?

Yup, I clicked on start, all programs, windows messenger. It opens the programs and says not logged in. Under tools, options, preferences, I don't have a check next to run this program when windows starts. Now when I clicked on file, close, it appears to be gone but maybe it's hiding in the background. The icon is not there in the bottom right corner. I wonder if it automatically starts when I open outlook.

Found the answer on microsoft website: (hope this works)

File ->run type services.msc and hit enter.
Scroll down to messenger and right click and choose properties.
Under startup type choose disabled and under service status choose stop.
Hit ok.
