It has been almost 3 years since I last built a computer, and I have barely paid attention to computer since then, and of course a lot has changed. I know most of what I want, and have priced it out, but the most important parts, I can't figure out. I need help choosing a MB and CPU. I'm leaning towards AMD because I have always loved my AMD systems, but I'm not totally opposed to Intell. I'm looking to spend around 5-600 on the MB and Processor. Maybe a little bit more. Any suggestions would be greatly appreaciated!

You're going to get a lot more action in this thread if you give the members here a bit of information. What are you planning to use this computer for? Do you have any existing components or are you going to be buying all new parts? Are you interested in a small form factor rig? What are your priorities - max performace now or upgradeability?

You say you know most of what you want - you should list it here so people know what mobo will best suit your choice of vcard etc.

There are a lot of helpful people here but many won't respond if you simply say 'what mobo/CPU should I get?'

Thank you for the response. I'm looking to build a rig that will allow me to do photographic editing quickly for my home business, but also will have a good frame rate while playing HL2 and other games of that nature. This is going to be a new build, and I'm looking at the following components.

2x CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory Model

2x eVGA 256-P2-N391-AX Geforce 6800GS 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card

1x Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200KS 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

1x ASUS Black E-IDE/ATAPI DVD Burner With 5X DVD-RAM Write Model

1x Antec LifeStyle SONATA II Piano Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450Watt SmartPower 2.0 ATX

Finally after reading a lot of posts here and on New Egg I think I would like to get this MB

ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD

and this processor

AMD Opteron 170 Denmark 1GHz HT Socket 939 Dual Core Processor

I've only heard good things about the processor, but there seams to be conflicting opinions on the ASUS board. My largest desire is to have a system that will be very stable, and I will not be OC it any time soon. Thank you again for any help
