Help please. RAM screwed up my WinXP...

I've been lurking around for a few months, now that I finally have a problem, I decide to join.

I was helping a friend out and took his RAM to run Memtest on mine. Well now when I boot up with either RAM it gives this error:

Windows could not start because one or more of the following files is either corrupt or missing:

<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.

Any ideas? I tried using the windows repair but it doesn't recognize my SATA harddrive outside of windows and it's a little too complicated for me.

Thanks in advance.

Try this:

1. Boot up to your Windows setup CD (make sure you hit F6 as setup loads and provide the drivers for your SATA controller)
2. Enter the repair console
3. Type "bootcfg /list"
4. Type "bootcfg /repair"
5. (from a previous post)

It will ask you three questions.

1st.. you choose the windows installation you want to repair. It is 1 most likely

2nd you type "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" or whatever you have.

3rd you type "/fastdetect"

Good luck

Apologies to S0Y73NTGR33N for not giving him proper credit for those steps. 😉

I don't need credit... I was just happy to be randomly browsing and find it!... lol...I don't care who uses it!

Hmmm...it gives an error at listing. I use Chkdsk and it freezes at 25%. Any ideas on what's wrong?

Please don't tell me that my HDD's completely messed up. That would suck balls.

I'm gonna leave it for the night and see what happens. Thanks for all the help so far guys.
