From the install CD when it asks wher eyou want to install you should be able to edit partitions & format them.

i tried to format the c drive, but it stated that the c drive had temp files on it for the xp setup and would not format the drive.

any other suggestions?

if it said it had temp files for the xp setup, that means that you probably tried running the install while you were in windows. if you boot the computer with the cd instead, you won't have trouble deleting the existing partitions.

What he said....

I do this several times a week, it works just fine....

How can that be the easiest way? If you use the CD it is just a step of the install. Using the floppy you have to boot up with the floppy, takes a few minutes, run fdisk, reboot, put in WinXP CD, boot, install. Instead of just boot cd, install.

no, booting off of a win98 floppy is a stupid way and doesn't allow for NTFS, which is a far superior FS. just boot off the CD and follow the directions.
