Help please installing SATA drive on K8V SE

Hi, I apologize for asking something that seems to have come up before, but I can't find a solution to my problem.


I am setting up a 250gb Maxtor SATA drive with a K8V SE MB. I know that I have to donald the appropriate SATA drivers depending on whether I connect it to the Via or Promise sata plug, but before I even get to trying to install windows...it never detects the hard drive.

Then even if I try to continue into Windows installation and I select the appropriate sata drivers, it eventually gives me a message saying can't detect any drives.

I've tried connecting it to the SATA1 and Pri_SATA plugs, but nothing seems to work. I tried pressing [tab] when the Via Sata message comes up but it shows no drives detected. I read you can press ctr+F7 to get into the Promise raid setup, but I have yet to be able to do that because it wold always give me the message that no drives detected. I checked the power plug and still nothing.

Any thoughts please? Been at this a while and it seems strange. Thanks


EDIT: Note also I have already updated the bios to 1004 (the latest)

Does the drive have a power cable, and is it spinning up at system startup?

It has both an old 4-pin molex power adaptor and a SATA one. I have tried connecting to the molex and also to the SATA via a 4-pin to sata power adaptor (not at the same time obviously).


I assumed it was spinning up because I felt it was warm after I shut down the system, but I didn't look for that specifically.

Hmm, well you might do a reality check by putting your ear up to it while starting the computer. The other thing I can think of is trying another SATA data cable. If neither SATA controller can even see the drive present, then I'm inclined to think it might be a faulty drive or SATA data cable.

Thanks for the thoughts..I haven't tried listening for it..I will do that but I did try two different SATA cables and no dice. I might have to RMA this back to maxtor perhaps.

try playing with your SATA settings in bios.

Night time bump, any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I will try again switching the SATA cable, listening for spin up, checking bios tomorrow. Thanks

Are there any PATA hard drives connected? If so, disconnect them and leave only the SATA hard drive + disc drive connected during installation.

No PATA drives, just this single Maxtor 250gb SATA drive and the floppy and cd rom. I'll have to do more investigating tomorrow after work. But thanks for any suggestions.

You did F6 during windows install and install the sata drivers for whatever controller your using.
Is the correct boot device selected in bios?

Where many have problems in the Sata setup is in the Bios.
If, for example, you were using the VIA solution:
1)Under advanced/chipset - onchip sata bootrom "enabled"
2)Onboard promise controller "disabled"
3)Under boot - set 1st drive to via vt6420 (for the via)

Hey I did 1) and 2), and the only devices shown under the boot order choices is the floppy and CD-ROM.

Yeah I had a K8V SE Deluxe and the Bios is where the trouble is setting up SATA drives. however if I remeber right there is a step between 2 and three that you have to enable other hard disk/boot device (or something like that). I sold the board several months ago or I would look it up, but if I remember right that was the problem I had.

Hmm ok I'll try to look for that. I agree that this board is a real PITA so far.

I could not find any such bios setting. The SATA drive is simply not being detected at all..

Nothing has worked so far


So I got an RMA, and we'll see if it was the HD itself. Otherwise maybe the MB or I am doing something wrong driver wise.


Can someone clarify for me:

Before I even install Windows, shouldn't it give me some sort of message or indication that a HD was detected as being connected right?

If you're installing XP on this disk, you should be booting from the XP disk first. Then when prompted you need to hit f6, then it will ask you for floppy with sata drivers (actually it will ask if you want to install mass storage device and you will have hit 'S' and then it will ask for floppy). The rest of the installation should go smoothly and you will have XP loaded on your SATA drive.


You're computer isn't going to detect your HD until you load the right drivers. Your bios only knows that you have the VIA and Promise controllers and you need to disable the one you're not going use.

Also, you need to make sure you don't have RAID enabled and use IDE (I know it's SATA, but you have to choose IDE). I know it sounds weird, but that's how it works.

When you're doing XP install and you load the floppy, you will have to tell it's a SCSI device-again, this may seem counterintuitive since in bios you're telling it's IDE but this is the only way to get it setup right. Take my word for it, cause that's how I set it on my computer.

If you're plugged into VIA SATA1, make sure you go to via website and the sATA drivers for your controller and install the correct folders (one is PIDE, I forget the other) and oem...txt file on the floppy.

Yeah I went through that, but during the Windows installation after I selected drivers, it eventually said that no hard drive could be found.

What is the best way to get the drivers on a disk? Just use the makedisk tool, or copy the specific ones that are the right drivers to a disk?

I did disable the Promise controller. How do I disable RAID and use IDE--its clear to me at what point are you saying I do this--in the bios?

Also the windows installation gave me the option of choosing these drivers:


"VIA Serial ATA RAID Controller Driver ", \VT6420, \SATA\winxp
"VIA Serial ATA RAID Controller Driver ", \VT6420, \SATA\win2000
"VIA Serial ATA RAID Controller Driver ", \VT6420, \SATA\winnt40
"VIA Serial ATA RAID Controller Driver ", \VT6420, \SATA\2003ia32

And I choose the first one (winxp)

I would get the ones from the VIA website because they are newer. When you were prompted for the device you wanted to install are you sure you selected the SCSI option? GO here and get the zip file below

Hmm is that the right one for the K8V SE? I was trying to use the VIARAID220d files.

You want to get the right drivers for the via controller on your mobo. It's the via6420, right?

You need to get the right drivers for your controller. DOn't worry if your mobo isn't listed. YOu have the via 6420 right?

Download that zip file (6 megs, hope you have broadband _. then open the driverdisk folder and put SATA AND PIDE folders AND txtsetup.oem on a floppy.

The worst that will happen is that it won't work.

The link I provided says that the 6420 is covered by the drivers in that ***310E.zip file.
