Help Please: I think I threw a bearing on my subaru wagon

Well... about 2 days after my girlfriend's transmission decided to off itself, I am presented with this little problem. I don't pretend to know much about cars but I need a little advice before I take it to the shop.

First off... I drive a 97 Subaru Legacy manual with AWD.

I started getting a clunking sound when I would turn my wheel. It turned in to a pretty bad grinding clinking sound and my wheel started to shake when I was driving.

I turned around in a parking lot, to head back home, and when I went to pull away, I was getting only a little bit of power in first gear. I get on the road and second gear isn't much better. 3rd and up seems to be alright.

I get home. I notice that the clunking sound continues now in first and second gear and I still have no power. I also notice that my car isn't stalling when I have it in gear and I take my foot off the clutch (found that out by accident).

I talked to a few more knowledgeable friends and most people seem to think it is a bearing or a tie rod. One suggested it might be a fly wheel.

I honestly have no idea, but I want to make sure I am not getting owned when I go get it worked on. Med School keeps me pretty busy and I only barely know the area.

The last shop I took it to to get worked on did a nasty hack job and they were only changing the oil (left a tool under my hood, never put the cap back on when they filled the oil, and since that day when I turn on my air it reaks of gasoline).

I am thinking about taking it to a subaru dealer in town in hopes that I won't have to worry about local shops. Any suggestions from anyone on here. I would really appreciate it.

Cliffs:
Clunky sound near wheel.
No power in first.
Local shops suck.
Help.

Not meaning to be the bearer of bad news, but my experience says that you may have a bad center differential. It's the carrier assembly on the back of your transmission. It's a limited slip assembly that distributes power to both the front and rear diffs. They seem to be notorious for it. 😛 The problem first develops when turning because the front and rear diffs are turning at slightly different speeds.

The assembly itself is not serviceable and as far as I know only available from Subaru. If it isn't too bad the back of the transmission can removed and the assembly replaced. If the damage has gone too far back case may need to be replaced as well as other parts or even an entire transmission. 🙁

Damn... my only glimmer of hope was that I am told manual transmission never ever go out.

An old college friend's boyfriend is a mechanic and I talk to him. He thought it may be the front axle and the reason it is still driveable is because of the AWD.

Well... I guess I will have to wait until wednesday when I am able to take it to a shop.

get under and look at the axles and joints, see if anything is mangled, otherwise it's probably differential territory
