Help please! Homeless Kitty needs a home. How do I print a frame from a mpeg file?

We are 'foster' parenting a homeless kitten. He is about 7 weeks old. My apartment manager requires a $500 deposit on pets that I can't afford. So... I am not suppose to have him. The no kill shelter I am wait listed on advised me of a minimum of a three month wait.
I have a Compaq with Windows ME. I recently bought my kids a Lego Studio with a digital cam and video making software. I tried to use the cam to capture pictures of the kitten to make posters to post about town ......then realized it was a no go. I was able to save a video clip of Kitty (he doesn't have a name) in Windows Media Player in mpeg format. I then tried to search on the internet for software to convert video to frames or snapshots to print but only ended up more confused. I'm afraid I don't know the lingo and or technical terms. Does anyone know of any reliable freeware to convert videos into printable frames, that is easy to use(for someone like me who is pretty much lost around a computer) ?!! Any advise is welcome!! Thanks!

well...if i were u...the easiest way to capture a snapshot is to press the Print Screen button on the keyboard while playing ur kitten mpeg file. That'll capture the screen of your desktop. Then u can just open MS Paint or something to paste and edit the snapshot :) Hope that'll help a little bit.

I don't know if you will be able to capture a frame using Print Screen. It doesn't capture overlay. I have always used HyperSnapDX for videos.

You are ALL so sweet and wonderful in trying to help me!!!!!!

NormanTheCow,

Thank you ever so much for your response!! I played the clip and hit 'print screen' and nothing happend, is it something I am doing wrong? Or my Windows ME doesn't know all its suppose to? Or is of average performance. *sigh*

XFreebie,
Thank you ever so much for responding to my post. You are right. You make a very good point. Despite the fact that I know statistics...... I just can't. I wish I could as in the end this would make less homeless cats. I have thought many a times in the middle of the night (can't sleep due to nocturnal kitten play times) to take him to the shelter. If I had the money, I'd get the kitten fixed first. The local shelter says they put down 50 percent of the animals. I need to try to place him first. :(

Diamond Member,
I couldn't get it to work. What is HyperSnapDX ?!

I think my software can convert mpeg to a pic file. How big is the mpeg? Leave me your email and I'll contact you
so you can send the mpeg to me.

oh yeah, the solution to ur secondary problem [getting a pic of ur kitty] is to play the mpeg, pause it to the frame u want

then hit the "print screen" button on ur keyboard, this will capture the entire screen display as a giant image, which u can paste into any pic editing program, such as MS paint.

its quite an overlooked feature of the keyboard, for years i used to think it would print the screen from the printer or something until one day i figured it out

Are you telling me you can't give away free pussy ... cat on AT? I can't believe this is still here.

I know for a fact that many of the members here are in dire need ;). Perhaps you should post something in ATOT.

You also may want to wash it up a little first ;) - nobody likes dirty pussy cats.

Is there free shipping on this item?

Actually that doesn't work for MPEG videos, or anything for that matter with MS viewers. You might want to download some VCD Tools, I think VCD Cutter is the name of the program I use most often for that.

Use Media Player 6.2, it'll allow you to get the screen shot using print screen and cut & paste it in paint.

If you have Quicktime, open the movie with that. Get pause to the frame that you want then go to Edit - Copy. The picture should be in the Clipboard. If not, it will ask you to download PictureView, which is a small addon. Install that and everything should be fine. Once the picture is in the Clipboard, you can use Paint to paste the picture and crop.

A kitten should be very easy to give away. Just bring it to a local shelter or even pet store. I know the local privately owned pet store I go to gets kittens all the time and gives them away. I assume he gets them from the local PAWS from their overflow. But I do know for a fact that kittens will go fast from wherever you take it - when I first got married my wife tried to get one from PAWS and they were always out - thank goodness for me!! We ended up with a Samoyed instead :)

Full grown cats are another story - people prefer kittens. Good luck!!

You can't "Print Screen" from moving video... Like someone suggested, try pausing the video at the frame you want, press "Print Screen" on the keyboard, and it will copy the desktop image to the clipboard. Paste into your favorite photo manipulation software and crop it. Voila!

PS Good luck with the kitty - post a "Free to a good home" ad in the newspaper. They are normally free... try posting in online forums for your city as well. You'll get calls the next day!
