Help please DDR memory question...

Hello all,

This may be a stupid question but here it goes I am currently building a new system it is using the latest Epox board socket A AMD athlon XP 2100+ rev B CPU Volcano 7+ cooler I bought one stick of DDR memory the module is Corsair XMS 512 3200 now can I run my new PC with the one stick or must it be paired up? The reason I ask is when I power up my new PC I get a C1 error then it shuts itself down and beeps at me What is wrong? I looked into the manual and it says C1h is memory related could I have a bad stick of memory any help provided would be greatly appreciated BTW I tried the memory in each slot and same result

U didn't mentioned which model u hv...but anyway....C1 means "memory errors". U'll hv to reseat the RAM. Push it in firmly.
 
Well you definitely don't need two sticks to operate properly; just one will work. A long shot here, but if you can either test that RAM in another machine or test someone else's RAM in your machine than you'll know for certain. Which board is it? The nforce2 chipset?
 
Hey guys thanks for the advise turns out neither? It was the copper shim I was using. I removed the shim and now the board works find go figure. I'm I going to be ok without the shim?

Well the point of the shim is to keep from crushing the core during HSF installation, so if you didn't crush it and it works, I think you'll be okay.
 
I think there's a problem with memory like the XMS booting for the first time... something to do with not reading it's high SPD settings correctly.

I belive the new BIOS corrects the problem (dated 1/29/03). Also booting with a regular stick of memory once, then shutting down and putting in the XMS works also, it just can't boot the first time. See if you can get a hold of some Crucial or something from a buddy just to boot once, then put in your XMS and download and install the new BIOS, pronto!
