Help picking a GTX 4--

Here is my build
PSU: antec EA 650
Processor: Core i7 920
RAM: Corsair TR3X6G1600C8D Dominator 6 GB 3 x 2 GB PC3-12800 1600MHz 240-Pin
HDD :2x SATA II
MB : EVGA X58 SLI LE

I almost got the evga gtx465 but people here at forum told me to choose the gtx460 (Thx a lot BTW , after checking some reviews gtx460 owns gtx465, im glad i joined this forum save me some money). But now which version should i get:

EVGA GeForce GTX 460 SuperClocked 1024MB EE (External Exhaust)
EVGA GeForce GTX 460 768MB
EVGA 01G-P3-1373-TR GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) Superclocked EE 1GB 256-bit GDDR5
So many versions im confuse :s.
Any other model beside gtx460 is welcome (maybe from ATI HD---)
My top will be $300

gtx 460 1gb is quite a bit better than the 768mb version and doesn't cost much more. get the 1gb card with external exhaust for the lowest cost possible. if prices are similar you might pay a few $$ more for evga, the rest are pretty much the same.

Don't buy the OC versions, that card will oc better than just about any stock overclocked card you can find.

If your gaming at 1900x1080, I agree, if your at 1600x1050 go for the gtx460.

I would discount the 768mb cards altogether. Also, the Superclocked version makes no sense to me since it has a louder cooler and at $250, it's only $20 cheaper than the MSI 5850 TwinFrozr II: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-500-_-Product
5850s are known to be monster overclockers as well.

EVGA has a superior warranty without a doubt plus a 90 day step-up in case you decide to get a GTX475 if it comes out. However, as the cards are made based on reference design, they are more or less the same.

2 things you will have to do once you get the 470: (1) Set Power Management Profile to Adaptive in NV Control Panel. This will let the card downclock to just 51Mhz in 2d mode and lets you get 38-41*C temps with just 32-40 percent fan speed (2) Download MSI Afterburner and enable a Manual Fan profile (I just lowered 0-50*C line to 40 percent fan speed and left the rest the same). My card idles using 40 percent fan speed and I let it ramp up to 70 percent at load. Temperatures are ALWAYS <80*C. If you don't enable a manual fan profile, the videocard will only get to 48-50 Percent fan speed which will result in 95-97*C load temps

After getting the 470, I realized that the high temperatures of 95*C had EVERYTHING to do with the inaccurate fan profile settings used by every single review website - unbelievable. I am amazed in 3 months hardly that many people mentioned that 470s load at 74-77*C at only 65-66 percent fan speed.....

Its a good choice at 245$ yes but the gtx 470 is 95% as fast as a 5870 since the newest driver release and cost 5$ less.

The gtx 470 is 15% faster and cost 5$ less, you do the math and decide whats right for you.

The gtx 470 seems to come real close ,= ,or better a 5870.

5850 and GTX470 trade blows in DX10 games, but once you factor in DX11 games, then 5850 is slower (unless you consider 2560x1600 where 470 runs out of texture fillrate).

- Battleforge, 1920x1200 4AA/16AF, 470 is 22 percent faster than the 5850

5850 is still an awesome card since it can overclock to 950mhz+ on the GPU and runs cooler and quieter. But considering GTX470 is faster and cheaper, it's probably a better alternative to the $270 5850. Both make $380 5870 and GTX480 look ridiculously overpriced! And when 470 is $10 more expensive than a 1GB GTX460, it makes it almost impossible to recommend the 460 unless you absolutely have a cramped case with poor airflow and want a much quieter system at load (because at idle at 32-40 percent fan speed, GTX470 is very quiet).

The gtx 470 is 6 percent faster then the 5870 @ 1600x900 and 1 percent slower @ 1900x 1080.

What resolution are you planning to play at? Also, are you planning on overclocking?

I'm in the same boat as OT. I've started playing PC games and would prefer 1920x1080 in all my games, my 5750 isn't cutting it

regarding the bolded section, you need to make sure the evga model you are getting is the A1 rev, not TR, as the TR comes with a 2 year limited warranty, where as the A1 comes with their limited lifetime warranty they're known for, and generally costs $10 more. since people are saying to buy the cheapest one and get an evga for the lifetime warranty, i thought i would clarify this, since if the OP follows this advice and gets the cheaper model he will only end up with a 2 year limited warranty, which defeats the whole purpose of buying the EVGA model in the first place
