My Son wants a new video card to play on line games like everquest and also FPS like UT . He has a 1.2 GHZ Athlon 200 mhz fsb, and 640 mb pc 133 ram, He now has a Geforce2 mx. Would a geforce3 ti 500 be worth the extra money over a geforce3 ti 200?
Visiontek Geforce3 ti200 64mb = $167, Visiontek Geforce3 ti 64mb = $303

What is the prefered brand? Leadtek, MSI, Visiontek, Elsa Gainward, Aopen?
Thanks for all input!

I have tried them both and for the $ you can't beat the Ti200. Look for one that has 4.0 ns RAM or better.

Thanks for the feed back!
Is the performance of the GF3 ti200 really that good over the GF2 mx?
How about over the GF2 GTS? I have that card and I dont' want my son to get too far ahead of me.
Old age and treachery should still win, over youth and skill, but having a hardware edge sure don't hurt
Also, are there any known conflicts with any Geforce3 brands on a MSI 6330 MB and a Athlon system ?

it will be night and day over a GTS or MX... get him A leadtek, PNY, GAinward, or even VisionTek Ti200 cards...

for 150$ price tag... he will have a nice steady 80FPS at 1024x768 max detail.. 😛

nope...no problems...yes there is a HUGE difference between mx and g3...a very big difference...as for gts...its a HUGE difference as well...but not to the human eye...as for which brand...dont get leadtek...they like to use slower ram...i've had experiences...dont get elsa...visiontek makes their cards...msi or visiontek would be a good choice...although i would recommend gainward because im using it myself...g3 ti200...make sure u get the golden sample with 4.0ns ram...its kickass...gainward has better 2d image quality...

I have the Gainward GF3 Ti200 and it is very nice. It replaced a GF2 Pro, the difference is notable, and compared to a MX, well... there is no comparison. The Ti500 is too expensive for what you get. Heck, my Gainward is running at Ti500 speeds (240/500) right now, and still has some headroom.

If you go with a Gainward make sure you get the Golden Sample version.

Thanks for all the help.
I will look into the Gainward with 4ns.
What about this eVGA with 3.3ns, is it a decent brand name? worth takin a chance if we are not into overclocking? I see a number of places have it listed on pricewatch.

The evga card probably has the fastest consumer memory in the world or something. It is not recommended for u if u won't oc. In fact, all ti200s are not recommended if u don't oc!

Why are you saying that all ti200's are not recommended if I do not OC? Isn't it a far faster card than the present G2 GST?

If you don't overclock, the money is probably better spent on a R8500 (buggy but faster). But a TI500 would kick its ass (driver wise of course 🙂)

Go to www.nvmax.com for the best, most complete ocing tool.

The only difference between the ti 200 and ti 500 is clock speed and price. If you can oc a ti 200 to ti 500 specs, you've saved yourself heaps of cash. The ti 200 has a slightly slower core, but often has 3.8 or 4 ns RAM, which should oc to 500mhz (ti 500 speeds).

poiuy223, don't know why you reckong the Leadtek is no good. It uses 4ns RAM, but mine actually has 3.8ns RAM 🙂 This thing flies, running at 225/540 with no probs. The winfox utility it comes with can be a bit dodgy though. I'd recommend either the Leadtek or the Gainward, both get good oc speeds. The Gainward only uses 4.5ns ram tho.

<< The Gainward only uses 4.5ns ram tho >>

That's FALSE! The Gainward uses 4ns ram. Only a few very earlier cards had 4.5ns memory.
