Help-PC messed up !-Runs super slow-after reformat

Hope someone can lend a hand. I have a Dell P3-933 with 258 memory, and Win ME opperating system.
Completely reformatted the hard drive, reloaded operating system, drivers etc.

Now the machine is really slow at times. The mouse looks like it is in slow motion ! It will take 4-5 minutes
to go into a program. It happens almost all the time. and is very frustrating.

Any help would be appreciated.

Loaded chipset drivers and application accellerator right after the fresh OS install. Also ran virus scan - using PC-Cillin and came back clean

hmmmm, try it not connected to the internet..you could have one of those worms...also, does it take long to load windows as well?

I'll try with out internet tonight, also will see what it does at boot up. also forgot to mention that I even replaced mouse after fresh OS install thinking that was problem, but to no avail.

You were aware that if you connect a new pc to the internet without all the updates you can get a worm in 1-2 minutes, right? Some people are not, just checking. In addition, having worked at Dell, I have heard of issues like yours with super-slow performance. Two things usually cause it. The CPU gets into "safe mode" or the hard drive is dying (or the OS is trashed). Check the bios and make sure the cpu is set to Speed : Normal.

<usual windows ME speech>
Windows ME is your problem. It is the worst operating system out there. I would highly suggest using 2k or XP instead of that. Thats the blunt truth of it.

Are your PC-Cillin virus definitions up-to-date (meaning, less than 48 hours old at the outside)? Also, try uninstalling the Intel Application Accelerator, then reinstall the Intel motherboard driver set afterwards.

edit: and yeah, if you can afford it, grab Win2000 Pro. 256MB of RAM is enough for Win2000 Pro to do most daily-driver office/student stuff quite well.

edit #2: also, it wouldn't hurt to get the free ZoneAlarm firewall software, even if you also have a cable/DSL router to keep the bad guys out. If your antivirus software is expired, there's also free Grisoft antivirus software for home users. Links & stuff here down the page a little. Batten the hatches 🙂

Amdskip, it is just silly to say his problem is ME. No matter what the OS, it shouldn't take 4-5 minutes to open a program. Many people run 98/ME just fine, and not everyone can afford to shell out $100 for a new OS. Of course, ME sucks, but i'd rather see people use it than steal software.

heifive, did you check to make sure DMA was enabled on your harddrive(s)? This can bring even the fastest machine to its knees, especially when doing a virus scan.
