Help. PC Hangs After Windows XP Loading Screen

In February I built a new computer. Specs are in my signature. The computer for the most part has been rock stable. Last night I had to shut down the computer improperly because of some kind of "lock up"

This morning when I tried to boot up, the computer posted, gets to the Windows XP loading screen and then hangs right before proceeding to the Windows XP login screen.

I booted in Safe Mode and the computer will boot into my Windows XP desktop. I tried a system restore to a yesterday and I have the same "hanging" problem.

I don't know what to do next, am I supposed to run something while booted in Safe Mode? The PC was working fine yesterday.

Thanks

Kerry

Try booting from the XP CD, pressing R to get to the recovery console and using the FIXMBR command. If that doesn't work go back there and run chkdsk /r/f.

Grrrr.

Well I can't get the computer to boot to the Windows XP CD. Is there another option? I was able to boot into Safe Mode, and from reading another post I check the Event Log for errors:

There SYSTEM ERRORS were:

1. Service Control Manager ID#7026
2. DCOM ID#10005

I can get the system to boot to Safe Mode, but normal boot will not work. What do I do now!

First of all, at the XP boot menu (F8) select "Last known good good configuration..." and see if that works. That should reset the registry to the condition it was in last time it booted succesfully. This should always be your first restort.

Failing that, try a system restore to a restore point FARTHER back than just a day ago. I see this happen all the time. People never go back far enough. System Restore does NOT make a full image of your drive line Norton Ghost does and recent restore points could be compromised.

Go back a week for starters, if that doesn't work try a month.

As a final resort, do a repair install, instructions are here: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

You must make sure that the boot order in BIOS specifies booting from the CD-Rom BEFORE the hard drive.

Hope this helps...

Update

I managed to get the CD to boot and went unto restore recovery. I ran both the FIXMBR command and the CHKDSK /r/f command.

The CHKDSK command said it found and fixed one or more errors.

The FIXMBR command successfully overwrote the partition (or something)

The problem is still not fixed. However I can access SAFE MODE.

Now what? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Well I might have fizxed my own problem. I am not sure what possessed me to do so but I decided to add/remove my nVidia display driver while in Safe Mode. When I rebooted the computer booted into Windows fine. I then used Driver Cleaner to remove any traces and I am redownloading the latest nVidia video driver.

I will let you know how it turns out.

Fixed (for now anyway)

Computer boots fine and does not hang after the XP loading screen. Perhaps this will help someone else also.
