I have my whole HD as partitioned space. I want to make a 20gig out of my 112gig partition. so I want to make my 112gig to 92gig and have a 20 gig of an empty partitions space. ANd I cant loose any data. how would I do this.

There are many utilities that can help you do that. One of them is Partition Magic.
Whichever utility you decide to use, make sure to backup all your data first.

1- Backup all your data, or be prepared to lose some or all of it.
2- If there is more than 92GB of data stored in the 112GB, delete enough data from it until it becomes less than 92GB.
3- Resize the 112GB partition to 92GB.
4- Format the unallocated space, left after resizing, to create a new 20GB partition.

Hi, Navid is correct. If you are careful and have your files backed up there should be no danger. I use Partition Magic Ver. 8. Never had any real problems.

It will help if you provide more information.
What OS are you using?
Do you have another physical hard drive?
Are there any other partitions on the hard drive?
Is there an OS on this partition?
What percentage of the partition is empty?
Do you have an external hard drive?
........

Windows XP pro
Yes
1 on each
Xp pro on one HD and the other I have linux
on x partition there 50%+ free space on t other HD I got 40% free space
NO

use partition magic. i've done this plenty of times without losing data. if you can't afford to lose it, create a backup. otherwisem use partion magic. it's a great program.

You can use the backup utility of XP pro to backup your data.
You can access it by going to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Backup.

It lets you select which files and folders to backup. Select all your irreplaceable data. It lets you select where to save the backup file. Select the other physical hard drive. Let it create the backup file. Burn this on a DVD or more depending on how much data you have.
Now, you have backed up your data. If things go wrong, you can always use it to recover your important data. But, you will have to re-install XP and all your programs if things go wrong.

You can use the same utility to backup your XP OS. For this one, you need to choose the third option given by the wizard "All information on this computer". This is for restoring your OS and not having to re-install XP and all your programs in case things go wrong. This will take longer and will create a larger backup file. Alternatively, you can use an imaging program like Drive Image or Acronis for this. You don't have to backup your OS if you don't mind re-installing XP just in case.
