help out a scsi newbie will ya...

ok here is what i gotz:
1 uw2scsi inito scsi host adapter (1 68pin internal/ 1 68 pin external)
1 Quantam Atlas V ultra160 scsi 68pin
1 ibm ultrastar 9es 68pin uwscsi hdd
1 68pin internal cable with an active terminator

this is my first encounter with scsi peripherals and i have no clue what all the channels and crap are... can somebody guid me thru?

Set the drive you want as C: to ID 0 (zero) and the drive to be D: to ID 1.

Hook it all up and you should be good to go from there. You MAY need to go into the SCSI card's bios (should be Ctrl A) and enable "Send Start Unit" or "Spinup Drive" or something like that (not sure what card you got).

wouldnt setting both drives on the same channel slow down the ultra160 drive and disable the lvd?

Not an expert on SCSI, you can say I'm a more of a advanced newbie, or something...
Does that adapter card have an internal 50 pin connector?????
I hope ya realize you'll be knockin that U160 down to a UW2 80mb/s, this setup can work if ya have a internal 50 pin...cause that way you get a 68-50 pin adapter for that IBM drive so at least both drives will be on seperate channels....you don't wanna knock that Atlas drive to a UW 40mb/s.

yeah... i know i am knocking it down to 80mb/s cuz i know it will never top 39mb/s (cheetah 15x's peak sustained transfer rate?). how much do the converters go for? where could i get one?

wait a second, i guess i misread your post. the ibm drive is 68pin as well... any possible way to put it on a different channel from that of the WD drive?

If having both of those drives working for ya is a must do then I'd say can get a different adapter card....one that has a 1-68pin LVD connector and 1-68pin connector....that way you'll run those drives on seperate channels.
This is only my suggestion, do what you feel is right......you can run that atlas drive alone no problem...and you can run both of those drives on one channel no problem ..you can do what you want...maybe someone can post other options to help ya.

does anyone know what the peak transfer rate for both drives are? unless the peak transfer rates combined are under 40mb/s it wont matter after all would it?

so what do you suggest me to do? i am not dying to use that ibm drive, not feelin like gettin another scsi adapter either... all my pci slots are occupied plus i am not plannin to get a cdr/w and my ide pioneer 105 dvdrom drive is sittin pretty. it would be nice tho if i could keep both drives on the same adapter and get away with no speed hit....

I'm not really sure on what to tell ya....question though, that one cable with the terminator on it, is that an LVD cable?

yup, its lvd rated with 7 endpoints...

I'd say hook up that Atlas...by the way its a Quantum not WD....and get that running first, I'm assummin you'll be loading windows on that drive? run it for awhile, get a feel on how your system is runnin.....then hook up that IBM drive, now here I'm not sure on this, if this drive will work ok on a LVD cable, if it does, this will be like a backup drive or for storage?
Then see how your system works with that drive on it? if it bogs down then sell the IBM and get a UW2 or U160 drive to work together with the Atlas.

oops, quantam that is... the host adapter is by inito and has 1 external / 1 internal 68pin connectors.
