help (OS wants to reformat my hdd)

i have 2 harddrives in my computer, one for boot/main applications, and one for storage.

the storage drive yesterday just all of a sudden became non-accessible. when i double-clicked on it, it takes a LONG time to respond, and when something finally comes back, it says "the drive is not formatted, would you like to format it now?"

what happened? i have all my files in there, help!

first off, don't reformat..

second, download the live cd for ubuntu, or any linux os for that matter, and pop the cd in to your cd rom.

make sure you boot from that cd rom drive, then when the linux os comes up, browse to the storage drive gving you problems, take an external drive if you have one, or just start copying files over to your main drive.

once finished, verifiy that you can read the documents that you just saved, stop the linux os and boot into windows, and verify that you can read the files that you just saved again.

once you have verified all of this, go to the manufacturers website of the troubled hard drive, download their hard drive tools and see if the drive is salvageable by testing the drive. if not, buy a new one. if it is salvageable, then reformat the drive.

hope this helps.

also, make backups of all your files for peace of mind.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. I had ALL my music on that hard-drive i was soo pissed, it would keep asking me to reformat! This is what worked for me:
1. reformat (but make SURE that you choose the "quick format" option) it basically just re does that partition table but does not destroy any data.
- now your drive should be active again and you can access it, but as expected you will not see any data in it, but don't panic.
2. download "file scavenger" you might have to buy it or "obtain" it because the download is a trail and it will only allow you to move a few megs of recoverd data.
3. With file scavenger browse to the appropriate drive letter and change search mode to "long search" and select a "recover to" location.
4. Let it fly.
5. 🙂!!!

Just out of curiosity, what motherboard do you have in that computer?

I had the exact same problem as well. It turned out my RAM was screwed. I replaced it, and the drive was good again.

Geeze, it?s not a ram problem (you would have wide spread data corruption) and formatting the drive then going back to get the information is doing it the amateur way. Purchase this software http://www.bitmart.net/ . It?s well worth the money or just download the trial to see if it will work. Don't touch the drive until you get some recovery software. If Restorer2000 can't find it then your drive is crispy bread.
