I also had a problem with a USB optical mouse. I found it to be jumpy and not as easy to control as the standard mouse. I had a little better result when I un-installed and re-installed the software; you might try that. The manual that is with it says to use a patterned surface but not one that is very repetitive; check the manual. Years ago, at work, I used an optical mouse which needed to use a dot pattern mat under it to operate properly. Maybe there will need to be a special type of mat for the current optical mouse also. After using the optical mouse for a while, I removed it and went back to the old mouse as, I liked it better. A friend had one and had all sorts of lock-ups with it. Maybe the driver needs more work.
