Help on Wireless Networking...

A couple friends of mine are setting up a broadband internet connection in their house. Cost is not really an issue for them. I would like to give them a few how-to's on wireless networking. The Cable company will install access in one room. THey would like to be able to access the internet from any room in the house as well as access files off of a central server. What hardware/software should I look into for doing this? Are there any guides out there? Does a wireless base station also act as router? Any information would be great!

THanks in advance

Well if your friends don't mind the cost...then I would recommend going with the 3com Wireless Air Connect. From what I have seen out there with all the different wireless products, I like 3Com's performance the best. If the cost is an issue, then I would recommend getting SMC, Xircom, or Linksys for their wireless needs. Both have the Wireless Router w/ Access Point.

If we are looking more towards business applications, we have Lucent and Cisco. Both cost an arm and a leg. But if the price isn't a big deal...definately I recommend the 3Com Air Connect.

You'll want to buy a broadband router (IE, the SMC Barricade) and whatever access point you prefer, plus the cards for the remote computers. Connect the Access point to the switch built into the router and you should be off and running. They do make combination routers/access points, but there's only a few companies that do. You might be better to pick your router and access point separately - If they happen to be the same vendor and that vendor has a combined all-in-one-box solution, even better! (FYI, SMC has a combined box, but I've never heard of their wireless products so I can't recommend it)

what do I need in order to make sure that each computer has a seperate user login? I would like to be able to set something up so that they can access address books and outlook stuff from any computer. Do I have to buy a server program or can I just do it with win98?
