So I got the CPU in yesterday and I am still waiting on my Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme coupled with a Silenx 14dba 72CFM fan.

The stepping of the E6600 is:
Intel Core 2 Duo
Intel®C '05
6600 SL9Zl MALAY
2.40gHZ/4m/1066/86
L649G984

Now I am not sure if this is a good stepping so I will let you tell me. However so far it has hit 2.8ghz on the Retail Heatsink and fan. I have not pushed harder since I am still trying to find some guides for my new DFI Infinity 975. If you have any useful info on the best way of getting started on this O/C that would be appreciated.
The system it will be in is listed below. I will probably withhold until Monday/ Tuesday for major O/C?ing since it is best to use the right Heatsink/fan. I was told the Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme is a beast so we shall see how it fans out.

Tell me what you think since I am used to O/C on the Venice 3200 and dfi Ultra D

oh u got a week 49 batch G

1. u want to oc, get a better heat sink

2. i dont know what the wall is on G, i hear its a lot better then F

3. with a good sink, i think 3.3-3.4 might be doable.

get a better sink, and then repost.

The folks at HardOCP in the e6600 overclocking thread who have reported in with the G batches seem to be having better luck than the F's - still a crapshoot though. I got lucky with my ZZF order and scored one from the same batch as yours and am also waiting for a better heatsink (on the UPS truck for delivery!) and hope to get the new rig built and tested at stock speeds tonight so I can start testing overclocks this weekend.

Looks like you've got a good balance of components there, the higher multi of the e6600 should keep you in safe FSB territory into a pretty high processor speed if your RAM and CPU can handle it.

The Heat sink was purchased cant wait for it to go in I have:
Thermal: Shin Etsu and Artic Silver 5 Thermal ( not sure which one I will use)
Heatsink: Thermalright Ultra 120 EXTREME
Fan: Silenx 72CFM 18Dba 120mmx25 fan

My E6600 is L640A633.

With a Tuniq 120 and stock voltage I was able to get 3.37 without breaking a sweat. The max temp, loaded with Orthos blend, was like 52.

I would expect that I could get 3.5+ if I tried a little harder.

shin etsu is the best. However read up on how to apply it. Its not the same as AS5

Remember you can just eyeball the cpu top area. But people are also telling me, you can do this method directly to the top of the cpu instead. You still need to use the tape, and credit card at the end, however you would have more accuracy on the die location.

heh as for my chip, i would say its in the 70% range. The max i can get her is 3.8
She's on 3636 24/7 and i can bring her up to 3.75 on a comfortable day. Meaning around 70F-75F. i dont like load temps anywhere near 60C thats why. :p

L631B120 the infamous B batch :D

heh... however dont expect your temps to be anywhere near mine. Your ultra compares to a stock heat sink compared to my water.

But with the ultra, i think you can probably do ~ 3.3-3.4 @ 1.375Vcore with no problems. Also your load will most likely be in the ranges of 55C-60C thats about where a tuniq lies. And your ultra is a few C's better then a tuniq.

If you have uber airflow, the load temps could be lower to around 50-55C. However i dont think you'll do sub 50 on load.

ALSO if possible i would cancel that overpriced fan

I've got a L647Gxxx and it maxes out at 333x9 (3.0ghz). No matter what voltage, but in its defense, it reaches 3.0ghz at stock voltage. Planning on upgrading to an "A" batch. (Using P5B-Deluxe)

I am waiting on the heatsink / Fan to come in I wonder has anyone had any luck with my stepping?
L649G984 Not sure which one this signifies

G signifies that it didn't meet A, B, or F, requirements. Simply means it takes a different amount of Drive (amps) to run and voltage to run.

All these people with C2D need to realize almost all the chips are going to top around the same, it is the skill of the overclocker that is going to put them at a certain level. To a certain point there are horrible chips and golden ones, but there is not a huge discrepancy.

A run coolest because they take the least amount of drive, B a bit hotter, and F and G are not the most tested yet. Some people swear B are the best clockers if you can keep them cool, that is because drive is high and they get hot.

C2D is not rocket science. If it takes 1.55v to get 3.6 ghz stable, just give it 1.55v.

Yoxxy do you have a link that confirms the batch letter is a binning indicator like you say?

I have a L645G334, I'm running it at 3.2GHz 1.37V vcore (AsusProbe, 1.4 in BIOS) with northbridge/southbridge/FSB voltages set to lowest.

I can run it at 3.4GHz if I set BIOS Vcore to 1.5V (actual 1.47V) but I prefer running at lower voltage, good enough performance for me. I haven't tried farther than 3.4GHz because I don't want to run faster fans to deal with the heat. I'll start running it at 3.4 when games demand it, or more likely I'll drop in a new CPU.

This is using an Ultra 120 with Scythe SFF21E fan (1200rpm, 50cfm I think, quiet).

So the G batch isn't necessarily awful, you can still get 3.2-3.4 in most cases from what I've read, but it requires volts.
