Help on Picking Out Mem

Ok so I'm going to give my old mem sticks to my gf and am making a minor upgrade to just dual sticks of 2x2g. (currently at 4x1g). Here's what I'm tossing around.

1066 mhz at Cas 5

or

800 mhz at Cas 4

The price is very close and I know timing is important but so is speed. I don't know enough to know which pulls ahead in this case.

Please lead me in the right direct!:D

either or is a good choice but if you want to overclock down the road with a different CPU that has a low multi, the 1066 would server you better...

i would get the 1066, cause you can sometimes run them at 800 and lower the cas

Timings and speed are not as important as you may think, especially since you have a Core2 chip. Since your Q6700 has a pretty high multiplier I'd go with whichever costs less. Performance is going to end up being basically identical.

Um...what DSF said is almost right.

Memory speed and timings has about 1% real impact on system performance, barely measureable once you start looking at real-world applications.

My suggestion: keep your current 4x1GB sticks. If they're stable and not holding back your overclock, why rock the boat? You're seriously not going to see any difference at all "upgrading" to 2x2GB on your system (and might go backwards if you get a bad stick).

Thanks for the suggestions.

I looked at the 7200's running at 900 but they end up with the same voltage requirement 2.0-2.1 as set running at 1066. If I was going to overclock anyway then I would have to mess with the timings and might end up with the same or worse as the 1066 anyway. The 800 set runs at 1.8-1.9 so that was my thinking on limiting between the two sets I listed.
Larry, would you still recommend these? Is that a credible thought?

7200

I understand there's not much real world difference between them but if there is any benefit and they cost within $5 of each other I just want to know which is the better way to go.

Like I sais in my OP, I'm giving my current Mem to my girlfriend. I'm tired of her using her 7 year old laptop on the floor plugged into my wireless router sitting on my bedpillows on the floor. I'm going to get her a P43 mobo, my leftovers (including my mem sticks because If I have to buy something I might as well get the better part ) and call it a day. I want to get all the parts ordered in the next two days so I can realistically get her set up when I have some time on New Years day.

The 7200 is the memory i am running my my 8400 machine. Currently they are at 800 4.4.4.12 and no problems what so ever (4x2Gb)

You repeat this in every thread. Do you have any evidence that they bin any tighter than other manufacturers outside of your own experience?

LOL i should hope so.

You have the DDR2-900 kit, which is rated for DDR2-900 4-4-4.
If it can't even do its rated speed, i'd say something was wrong :p

Try getting farther @ 4-4-4, or see how far you can get 5-5-5.

Then i'll be more impressed ;)

As for the OP's question, i'd go with the DDR2-1066 of those two, though i doubt i'd be personally buying either.

Thank you for the feed back. JJMIII thanks for the link to the your answer C. I don't know why those didn't come up on my power search? For $10 less and free shipping over the 1066, that's a much better option!

N7, if you wouldn't be buying either set what ddr2 memory would you suggest in this price range? I'm not looking to move up in price much if at all but since you are the section moderator, I would value your opinion on the subject.

Its a bit more pricey, but still very cheap compared to ddr3. Of course you don't need 1100 mhz, (well, idk, to each his own)
but if ur willing to spend a bit more they are pretty nice and at a nice low voltage.

Also, I hear these work differently on different mobos. Check compatibilty, I had a little trouble running them at rated specs with my 780i FTW, but your x48 may do extremely well with them.

I figure you may as well get them, as ddr2 is so cheap now, unless you really want to save a little bit of cash.
