Help on overclocking an Athlon XP

I'm not an AMD buff, but I'll give ya a heads up. Peeps will need to know what Mobo, CPU, RAM, PSU, ect... before they can help you.
 
My specs are:

Epox 8k7a mobo
Xp 1600 cpu
256mb Crucial 2100DDR ram
Codegen 350watt PSU

My CPU cooler is a Coolermaster Ep5-6i11, running at 39c idle, 42 load.

Do i have to change some jumpers on my mobo to enable BIOS voltage control perhaps?
 
Look in the motherboard manual. I'm not familar with that particular board but Epox is usually a good oc'er. Mine is. There should be menu in the bios for the voltage control, or maybe you need a bios update.
 
Lookedi n the manual and they dont even show it in there, strange. There's a jumper on my board tho, that adjusts Vcore voltage. I could just use this right?

I'm thinking of setting it to +.2v, that should be good for some minimal Overclocking right?
 
Only up the vcore if you actually need to!,in otherwords if your highest achieveable clock speed is just a little unstable in Windows then up the vcore in the smallest possible steps until its stable (I wouldnt go above +10% with air cooling to be safe),otherwise knock donw yor FSb a few MHz.
Though I'm not familar with your m/brd I'm sure if you dig around the bios settings you will find the vcore adjustment.

If your happy with minimal overclocking then don't bother adjusting the vcore ,just go for the highest FSB which is stable

My current max FSB is 142. thats only 80mhz more than my default clockspeed. So its safe to up the core .2v right?
 
Ok, problem.

Even at 1.89v (up from 1.69v) I still cant go any higher FSB wise than i was able to go before i upped the voltage. I'm at 1490mhz now, altho it isnt very stable.

Anything above 143 fsb, right after it posts, its just a blank screen with a blinking cursor, and it doesn't continue to load up windows.

Would this just be because my cooling is not good enough? I'm running at 44c idle with it at 1490 mhz.
 
You also have to think about things like your ram, ps and video card they are all effected by overclocking your fsb.

I don't see why any of my components would be limiting my fsb like this, I have an AMD reco. PSU and a geforce 4 ti 4400.

Any ideas on what would cause this problem? Could it be my overclocked videocard perhaps?
 
Its quite likely its your RAM thats holding you back ,I see from the other thread you are running the same RAM as me, I am using DDR 2100 crucial RAM.
What are your RAM timings?
To allow my RAM to go past 145MHz FSB I had to change the RAM timings from 2-2-2-5 to 2-2-2-6 ,I dont recall exactly what the last timing was offhand but it had precharge in the title ,that allowed me to go to 153MHz
(btw I would drop the vcore now seeing as it made no difference to you)
