Help!! on new build

I was putting together a system earlier this evening combining a KT7 MB & duron chip with pieces from an old dell that I have (floppy, cdrom, HD, sound, video). The system booted ok, but I could not get it to recognize the HD or cdrom.

The bios would not auto detect the hard drive. I booted with a windows start up disk, and it also detected no HD. I booted with maxblast software, and it seemed to recognize (and even format the drive) but the the system never did. Would the system fail to recognize the HD if it was jumpered wrong? I no longer have the documentation for the drive, so I was not sure how to set the jumper (after going to the Maxtor website, I realize that it is probably jumpered wrong). The HD is on IDE 1 and the cdrom on IDE 2.

The cdrom was the master on IDE 2 on the old system, as it is on the new one (so I did not change the jumper). Can you think of any reason that the cdrom would not be recognized.

I've checked the cables and power connections numerous times. Thanks!!

Ok, I take it this isn't the RAID board right? If so, try your drive on the HPT controller otherwise... In your Award BIOS where you setup your drives, do u see your HDD/cdrom listed as any master/slave? If so then click highlight and press enter and make sure that both IDE Detect and Access mode are set to AUTO. The jumper settings for your HDD aren't on the top of the disk huh? If it worked in the old system as primary master and the cdrom worked in the old system as secondary master and u haven't changed any jumpers it should work accordingly. If all stills fails, there has to be some serial number or product number on your HDD so you can reference it at Maxtor's site. I'm aware that some maxtor drives have recognition issues with the HPT 100 controller on the RAID board, but haven't heard anything yet about the onboard controller... hope that helps LMK if u have any success

Thanks for the reply Techwhore. The problem was twofold:

1. I didn't have the hard drive jumpered correctly

2. I didn't have autodetect set in the bios.

Once I fixed both, it was smooth sailing. Thanks fot the help!!
