I am currently putting a new machine together for a friend but he doesnt need anything top of the line. I am going to get him the AMD 1800+ or 1900+, and i was wondering what mobo and chipset would be the best as far as price and compatibility. Let me know what you think. Thanks

if you want a great performing board (very stable/compatable) i would go with something based on the via kt333 chipset
i like the epox boards (several of them) newegg has them starting around $70

if you are looking for low budget (integrated video/lan/sound) i would go with something like the via km266 or km133a depending if you want to use ddr ram, or if you have a bunch of older sdr (pc133)
km266 uses ddr
km133 and km133a use pc133 (if this is what your wanting you should get the "a" version so you can use athlonXP's)
newegg has these starting around $60

I would look at the Shuttle AK35GT2 or if you want raid look at the Shuttle AK35GT2R. You can get either of these board for less than $99 at newegg.com or Mwave.com. They have the C-Media 5.1ch Sound Card.

I never had much luck overclocking amd cpus. Prices for both Amd and Intel cpus are already starting to drop again, even before Intel's prices cuts in two weeks. One posting listed the xp 2200 at $153. At that price, I think I would get a cheaper kt266a board and skip overclocking. I just got a refurbished asus board from newegg. It was the first refurb that didn't even have a manual or cd, but I'm still happy, as it was almost half the original price, especially with free shipping.
