I should be getting my new system in the next few days. It will be my first with a Via Chipset, so am new to alot of this. I would like advice as to the order and version of installation of any and all drivers (via, sound, nVidia, ect..) from format and installing windows to completion. I am looking for stability and quality vs. fastest speed, so please take that into consideration, also realize you are talking to someone who isn't too computer literate

Win 98SE
MSI K7T 266Pro2-6380 V2.0 (266A)
Athlon XP 1700 +
256 Crucial DDR 2100
Leadtek Geforce 2 GTS 32
MX300 Sound Card
USB Mouse

Thanks for any help,

Billy

Hehe you'd better become computer literate pretty fast if you have to do all that :) Anyway, here's my personal checklist, I have Win98SE. Your mileage may vary. I'm don't remember the latest version numbers off the top of my head, someone else will have to help with that.

1. Setup BIOS.
2. FDISK and FORMAT hd.
3. Install Windows?don?t install video drivers, run in VGA.
4. FastTrak driver (I have a RAID setup).
5. VIA 4in1 service pack?non turbo for AGP (my mobo doesn't like it, yours may).
6. VIA USB filter driver
7. VIA AGP driver, non turbo.
8. Microsoft VIA USB patch.
9. Keyboard & mouse drivers (MS Internet keyboard & Logitech mouse).
10. Install NIC & drivers.
11. Setup internet connection.
12. Reset cable modem if needed.
13. Remove MS networking (saves you from the password screen).
14. Windows Update, IE 6.0, DX 8.0a, HDD cache fix, other updates.
15. Monitor & video card drivers (21.83 is the latest I've used).
16. Sound card driver.
17. CD-ROM driver.
18. ASPII patch.
19. CD-RW software, patch.
20. Set RWIN (Dr. TCP--DSL Reports).
21. System properties/performance/advanced--set file system to network server, no search for floppy disk.
22. Clean out startup programs.
23. CD?no autoplay, yes for DMA.
24. IE options->programs-> uncheck look for default browser.
25. Install Word, Excel (patch both), Norton (run LiveUpdate), TweakUI.
26. Restore: address book, emails, IE favorites, etc.
27. Norton Ghost.

Thanks Pipboy !

Hopefully the guys at the shop will start the installation for me, and I will just have to do sound, video drivers then software, but I just wanted to be ready in case they didn't. I am hoping to get things working right again. I had a PIII 800 fry along with the motherboard. I upgraded to a P4 1600 on a PcChips VIA VT8753(P4266) and can't seem to get things working right. I had formatted and installed everything, but get worse performance than with the PIII 800.

Again, thanks, and wish me luck !
