Help on HDD please.

I'm quite familiar with upgrading or replacing parts in computers, but this is going to be my first time building a computer.

What I have ordered
-Asus P4C800E Delux
-P4 3.2ghz 512kb
-1024MB PC3200 Corsair TWINX XMS
-Zalman CNPS6500A-CU
-Case w/ Antec 430W PSU

I haven't yet made up my mind on HD. I was thinking of having 2 80GB HDD on RAID 0 and maybe in the future mirroring these 2 HDD onto 1 160GB HDD using RAID 1. <--- is this doable?

Now the question is,.. what HDD to get? WD, Seagate, Maxtor, Hitachi, or ?? please help. what are the advantages and/or disadvantages over one another.
Thank you for your help,

I believe you can change the RAID mode. You'd have to check with the card/chip manual to see if you can.

I prefer Western Digital and then Maxtor. Both of them have fast HDDs with great RMA service (WD probably the fastest and easiest to use, Maxtor is a close second!) Try raiding together two WD Raptor 75GBs! It might be a little noisy, but the speed will knock yer socks off 😀

I like WD. I've been working on PC's for a while and I've seen Seagate's and Maxtor's go bad. Haven't seen too many Hitachi's though. I've got two WD 7200RPM drives in two pc's for as long as 4 years no problems thus far. Even after a good hosing from Win ME: i.e.: lock-ups, crashes, re-installing it, and it's still kicking. Now, I'm not saying that WD is the best because I sure someone out there has found a bad one or two. But so far I've been pretty lucky with them. However on the other hand I have a Hitachi in my Laptop that I'm starting to here some strange noises coming from it.

Another question regarding Raid. If I use Raid 0 on 2 80GB to increase the speed. Would Raid 1 to a single 160GB slow it down?
Oh. and where do you guys buy your WD HDD?
