CheesePoofs, have you hade any chance too check on the throughput numbers?

I have reset my counters and got the following numbers:
Agent 1 sent: 8,2 MBytes in 24 hours, received: 13,9 MBytes in 24 hours, agent 2 had the same numbers (8, 21 Mbytes and 13,89 Mbytes respectively)
That makes a total of 44,2 MBytes per day for two agents, for 30 days that is 1326 MBytes ... If you have more agents then of course the amount rises ...
Does that seem reasonable?

I can't track the amount of data being sent over the internet with my firewall, but I can tell you that DIMES accessed the internet over 2500 times in a little more than 30 minutes.

Well I have 1 computer at home running and a lappy on the road with me. I got a "call" from the front desk of my hotel asking me to check out my computer for viruses due to the bandwidth it was using.

on a lighter note I will be adding back on 6-7 more crunchers when I get home. Which brings me to a question: Can I run two instances for my HT'd P4's?

Jim got an intresting email from his isp that might be related here. He posted on the net dimes forum.

I checked my bandwidth earlier and barely got over 2 mbs at most only one read above 3mb for my connection.

After jim gave me the heads up I stopped the client on all 4 machines now I am at 4mb and above.

Note:
we have had rain the last 2 days and it has messed with my connection, tv gets too weak a signal, so this might not be dimes related. But I am seeing a 1mb increase over what I had when dimes was running.

Freewolfs thread.

If that is the only 'evidence' they have I don't see that they have a leg to stand on. It's quite obviously a ping and traceroute which surely can't be constituted as an attempted system breach.

I think it's likely an overzealous systems admin combined with an idiot tech support actually taking notice of it.

Only thing I'm not certain of is why NMAP is mentioned. I'd guess it's whatever software they are running detecting these is marking them as nmap related when they aren't ??

I honestly haven't a clue about any of this, just a fear of losing my 6mb down connection 🙁
I can't afford to lose that, the best I can get here is 1.5mb down if I do, and that might feel like going back to dial up :Q

I will post updates if any 🙂

My ISP reacted too: they sent a freindly e-mail asking what was going on - why the many pings and traceroutes. They explained that they had observed this and wanted to make sure I did not have a virus, trojan or such bad ilk. I told them that I had a curent virus scanner of good repute, a hardware and software firewall and that I was aware of the pings and traceroutes. I explained the reason, sent them to the home page of Dimes, sent them links to TAS (with installation guide and info). The response was: "Would you please limit yourself to one agent running or two at most, please?" I find it hard to resist such a plea, so I am running one agent only - for now.
OK they may be overly sensitive. But for the project the "location is important", not the bandwidth or the CPU-power. The stats will be as they will, that is not so important as the science.

As far as I know my ISP does not have any bandwidth limit ... thank goodness.

I have my modem and router sitting atop some Audio Visual Equipment that is direct view when I'm watching TV. I have noticed since I installed DIMES the modem and the router never stop. Besides DIMES, I'm also running the TeAm Enterprise SetiQueue, and I like to download streaming radio shows at various times of the day and night.

If my ISP started charging by bandwidth usage, I'd definitely have to re-think the way I use the internet.

Yesterday, I did experience some slow web connections to my broker. I may have to shut down all of the "extra" bandwidth using programs when I have action in the markets.

A little late but the response :

I will have to check this more thoroughly but most likely this is us.
Congratulate yourself on being the second user in the last year who got an official report from his ISP (and posted on the forum ).

So here's how we dealt with the previous one. We wrote a very nice letter telling how important DIMES is, and how we are completely harmless and suggesting to remove any IP wished from our probing list. Didn't get a reply back, but the user didn't complain again, so I presume they got the message.
If you want us to do the same for you, send me the email and I'll write them ASAP.

BTW, this is exactly why we do not allow more than 4 measurement per minute per agent. So that we "fly under the radar" as much as possible.
Other guys who do measurements, such as hosted on the PlanetLab platform were amazed to hear from us we have such a low rate of complains. They have a few every week, but this is mostly because they do not have such a huge spread as DIMES does.

Cheers,
Eran
PS In Israel we just celebrated Jewish New Year's so everyone are on holiday, but we'll try and clear up the backlog ASAP.

lol

Good that they emailed them for you 🙂

Btw I've noticed in the stats that many new users (me,Ray & Smoke included) have yet to score a ASN & L point ,what's that about?

I've had to shut it down on the cruncher I was running it on, seems to be interfering with remote access (UltraVNC with encryption). 🙁

I'll see if I can find another cruncher to install it on.

Bummer 🙁 ,& I was hoping we'd have a little competiton going there ,well I guess it gives me time to catch up until you find another rig 😉

They said that a lot of those had already been found, there are some left but they are off the normal routes. There is a good chance you will find some, especially if you crunch long enough.
