I had that happen in windows using the java virtual machine.

I don't have the issue anymore.

I d/l the Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 4 then then the project and all is fine even thru updates.(I use the offline version)from here

seems to work better on my machines that way.

Hope this helps

Hmm, this is really interesting reading.
Om my comp there is a big difference in cpu-usage wit or without dimes when I have the dimes-window open: almost 15%.
When I have the client running in the tray there is less tan 1% of difference with and without dimes.
I checked with sandra and with 3dmark (older version 02? 01?).

I noticed another thing:

I use Internet Connection Sharing on my home network. 3 PCs connect through my fourth to the internet. As it turned out, the three PCs all have about the same score on DIMES, but the fourth, the one that is really connected to the internet, has a significantly lower score than the others.

Take a look here: http://www.netdimes.org/data.php?user=3396

Any idea why or how?

All PCs are clones , same OS, same firewall, same settings.

Hi Christian,
Just a thought: did you not have a outage (power- or connection of Dimes to the net) with the 4th computer? It may very well be thetr the hours the comp is down do account for the difference! The power of the comp does not matter to Dimes (as you see from my stats my most powerful comp (agent 1) does not differ very much from the slowest - agent 2a); the diffrence is explained totally by the fact that there is a almost 36 hours difference between the times I started the agents. So: the thing which matters is time on the net and the time the comp is on.

Have you looked at the maps on the three high-scoring comps? I hope that they differ - but they should all have some nodes common: the 4th comp, your ISP and then probably the ISP of the ISP. My network is similar: I have one communication computer to which two hubs are connected. The other comps connect to the hubs. The communiction comp connects to the net outside through a router (which has a DMZ for a future webserver).
In my maps I always have one common pathway: the originating comp, the communication comp, the router, the ISP and then the ISP of the ISP. Then everything splits up.

I will put DIMES on the communication comp and see what happens.

so out of curiousity, i ran a 3dmark and found my sore was ~25% lower.

Funny ,so did I last night ,my 3DMark 03 scores only dropped about 100 points with Dimes on
I've got a Radeon 9700 Pro ,XPM @2.52GHz & 1GB RAM

Nope, that's not it. The phenomenon started from the first day I installed DIMES. Yes, the outage was on my main rig, but with it being offline the other 3 didn't have an internet connection as well --> nothing to map ;)

The maps look the way you describe it. I still don't understand why the ICS PC scores so low.

Maybe I'll ask on the DIMES forum ...

Yes, do that please - and let us know the answer. BTW, I can't get the linux-version to work at all. (my communications computer is a Suse 9.0 linux comp). Will work on it - have probably to recompile the prog... I hate knowing too little about such stuff ... and having too little time to learn and fix it :( .

Well, that gives me at least some consolation - I am not alone :( and :)

If you want we can trade so you dont' have to deal with this :p;)

Did you check to see which java you are running? I'm using the Java runtime environment and not java virtual machine, so it might jsut be that java virtual machine needs much higher CPU usage for some reason.

You are right: the java-virtual-machine needs much more of the CPU- and memory resources than the runtime version. I have seen that some time ago, and have switched ...

That wasn't my discovery, I was just reiterating what Wolfsraider said. I never knew there was anything but the runtime environment.

whoops i forgot to do that. i saw wolfs sask that too, d'oh!

anyway, its " J2SE Runtime Environment" java runtime standard edition version 5 is what it says.

thats not the VM, right?

i'm going to go try it on my other machine.

Correct that is the one you want

it does better for me than the java machine, but if there are remnants of it (java virtual machine) left when you install the java runtime standard edition version 5, it can cause trouble as well.

well, i'll have to try some other things. i guess tomorrow i'll try uninstalling it and starting over.

even my 3000 venice with a 6800gt (all stock) is exhibiting the same behavior.

no dimes ~11k
with dimes ~9k

I went to setup dimes on my parent's Mac, but apparently you need MacOSX 10.3 to use java 1.4, which is required for dimes, and they only have 10.2.8. If anyone knows any workaround to this besides installing OSX 10.3 (which they will never do), I'd love to hear it. Otherwise ... oh well, it was worth a shot. :(

Hi CheesePoofs,
I have tried the Mac-agent, and it did not work at all: not on OS X10.3 and not on OS X 10.4. I gets the info on all the nodes but it does not send them to the server. I have posted a question in the Dimes-forum, but no answer as yet. :(
