Help on buying a DVD burner

Im out of the loop, whats the dvd burner to get. I see so many at new egg, will a liteon one do fine. I mostly just want this to be able to install games, since they are all DVD now, but I also like the idea of being able to burn LOTS of high density backups and would dual layer be good for backup movies.

Whats the best one to get at fair price.

Im looking at liteon

phillips

samsung

I would say either Samsung, Lite-on, Pioneer, Ben-Q (if you can find them), or LG
I have heard the recent NEC's frequently have issues, or just aren't as good as they used to be for now.

The differences seem to be that one may be better at one thing, than the other.
I believe that the Pioneers have a good reputation on DL-Layer media with very good PI scans when compared to say the Lite-on or another make.

I know it is another forum but I would do some looking around at http://www.cdfreaks.com/
as their is LOADS of information on each of the manufacturers, and which one is better at what and with what media.

cdfreaks has crazy info. I think that for about $30, you cant go wrong with any current dl-burners and some verbatim media. I used to go crazy over all that scanning crap, and testing media out, buts its overrated and a waste of time. Buy some good media, and pick your drive. I have two current samsungs and 1 current lg; its all the same stuff unless you want to get anal about it.

I just bought that Philips one you posted to replace my old and very used Sony drive that finally bit the bullet. I don't do a lot of burning so my main focus was price and looks, and the Philips one fit that critique perfectly. I only burned 2 dvd's so far using Roxio Creator Classic; it worked flawlessly.

I had never used a Philips drive before, but the reviews were good and from my experience Philips is a good brand so I figured what the hell, might as well go for it. And I'm glad I did.

I can attest to that. The CD laser on my NEC 3540A burned out recently. Unfortunate because it was a nice drive, very quiet.

I also have an LG drive. Quite loud, but no issues so far.

I use the HP Internal and a Samsung/Toshiba External, both Lightscribe enabled. I have had no issues with either. I primarily use HP, TDK, and Verbatim media. I had problems with the last couple of Lite-On Externals that I owned.

ive had about 3 lite-on drives in the last few years and ive had good luck with all of them. Id just suggest getting a sata drive

I would suggest that you look at the liteon drive but refrain from getting a sata interface unless your drive controller is one of the newest chipsets. There are reported issues of sata optical drives loosing contact with the controllers on older chipsets which could cause problems if you're trying to install an os from a cd/dvd and the drive looses contact. I thought about getting sata this time around but I needed the sata ports for my hd's even with a siig add in controller.

Where's LG😛?

I've had the best luck with LG with 3 different models, all of which have worked perfectly. Then there's the two Lite-Ons that were nothing but trouble. Their customer service has also been pretty crappy and slow. They take weeks to even respond and when they do complete the RMA, it's a joke.

So far, with Sony, never had any issues or any need to return / exchange the drives.
Now about 2 years old or so

I was wondering about that, I have a DFI ultra (the glow-in-UV-light one) w/2600 AMD mobile chip so I figured it would be ok to go sata with a rom drive, everyone I know has had nothing but headaches with sata, but they were also doing HD upgrades and having to re-install OS's.

And thanks for all the input guys. I really need this upgrade, everything I want is now on DVD.
