So, they have refurbished iPhone 3G's for $50 with a 2-year commitment, but we aren't interested in the Data plan (at least, we would prefer to avoid it). So, are there any other good phones (as in, iPhone substitutes) with or without a touchscreen for about that price?

To clarify, this is with the discount for committing to a 2-year contract.
--EDIT--
I asked about canceling the data plan, but the fine print for the iPhone says that it is required for the life of the service for the iPhone. Dumb question about a dumb policy

That is with a 2-year contract, and it does require a data plan. So, I am looking for something that would provide equivalent functionality for music (the onboard 3.5mm jack, especially...though a 2.5mm one would be alright, as Sennheiser and Shure both have some decent offerings, or I could get an adapter cable), while not requiring the $30/month data plan.

Nokia Xpressmusic 5310?

It's not an iPhone but it is a good MP3 playing touchscreen phone with a 3.5mm jack.

I'm so confused...

So you want a voice phone that plays music without a commitment to a data plan?

ive actually seen people who have iphone 3G's without the data plan. they just simply called att and told them that they werent using it at all and to put a block on it.

however, another option you have is tracking down someone who has an original iphone...att doesnt require you to get a data plan if you have the original iphone :)

It isn't that ridiculous, my Verizon Motorola v750 has an mp3 player and a MicroSD card slot. It does not have a 3.5mm jack, but instead has a 2.5mm jack, but you can get a cheap adapter for that (I got one in a kit that had a 3.5mm male-3.5mm mail cable [for connecting my ipod to the aux port in my car], short 3.5mm male-3.5mm female cable [for using older headphones on the 1st Gen iPhone], 2.5mm male-3.5mm female adapter, dual head 3.5mm adapter for airlines, and another as well that I can't remember). All said and told, $11 at WalMart, Scoshe brand. The aux cable didn't last too long, but the rest of the stuff seemed pretty well made.

Don't think AT&T has it, one could be unlocked though, it's definitely not touchscreen. Has a 3.5mm jack and is overall a very kick ass phone for the price. Don't think he'll find it for less than $100 without a contract and like I said this is a T-Mobile phone.

Ok, I stand corrected on several points. Not touchscreen, not AT&T, but does have a 3.5mm jack and generally good reviews. Thanks for the corrections, Quebert.

That would only be an option if you've already had the phone for the 2 year contract, or bought the phone through another place and are only using it on ATT. When you buy it with a contract through ATT, you HAVE TO have the $30/mo data plan for those 2 years. Otherwise you have to pay the ETF.
