Help o/cing my +3200 Venice, PULLING HAIR OUT!! :)

3200 Venice, Epox 9NPDA+Ultra here..

I am totally new to OC'ing so I figured, I would get at least 2.5 out of my chip. Either I'm wrong or I screwed something up...

Here's the setup:

3200 Venice
Epox 9NPA+Ultra (just flashed to new bios last week)
4 x 512 Corsair XMS (DDR 400)
FS Blue Thunder 500w

I went through the steps on Zebo's Guide (yes i upped volts on CPU and DIMM), and here's what I came up with..

Max HTT / FSB:
I set PCI to 200 Mhz
CPU Clock to 7x
Memory to 100Mhz
Multi to 3x

Board maxed out at 300 Mhz

Max chip:
PCI = 100mhz
Clock = 10x
Mem = 100Mhz

Chip maxed at 250 Mhz (prime 95 stable)

Memory:
maxed at 230 Mhz (didnt go all that hard on the mem, stayed with this to be safe)

Now I tried to use the script in the guide to help with the settings, here's what I found with those settings...

1st Choice: (The only reason I chose this first is becaue I can only set my mem to 100, 133, 166 or 200. And can only use whole numbers as my multi and HT)
HTT: 277
CPU: 9 x 277 = 2493
Mem: 5:6 (166) x 277 = 226.63
HT: 1 x 277 = 277

When I tried this I got the two long beeps at boot, system would not post. The Epox auto-kicked it down so I could get back into bios. I could not try any of the other choices, b/c my board would not adjust to the settings like I explained in the above.

After trying a few different combinations, I still could not get into Windows. I then had to reset the CMOS, and start over. I then left everything at default and tried a weak o/c just to see whats going on.

HTT: 220
CPU: 10 x 200
Mem: 200 (then tried 166)
HT: Auto

This would not post either, sometimes it would, but not get to windows. I kept getting some kind of file error when Win tried to load. And after going back to stock, a ton of programs would not work properly in winsdows... I had to restore to the previous day to fix anything....

Ok, guys what am I doing wrong? I double checked all the steps in Zebo's guide..

I dropeed my mem to 512 x 2, still same issues....gah

Getting a little frustrated here... spent a ton on this stuff and cant get it to go at least to 2.5...

Do I need to OC with a fresh install? Is there a tool I need to be using to divide my memory lower?....

I am hoping there is something I forgot to do thats holding me up here, thanks for the help..

ok, did you just go into the bios, and set it to those settings in one boot? you have to change things gradually, maybe 5-10mhz at a time. otherwise, you will crash or even corrupt your bios. clear cmos and try again.

Set your HT multi to 3 for that last setup? I would feel totally safe starting at 2.2 ghz with a 3200+ venice, so I don't see a problem there... sounds like it may be a bum mobo or chip... There has to be something we are missing though, for you to get such horrible results!

Yea I just booted into Win with FSB at 220, HT at 3, Cpu multi at 10x = 220

Yea that worked fine, but where do I go from here?

I also rolled back the bios to 3-05

Start creeping up the HT by 10 mhz or so bumps with the 166 divider, since you have already spent so much time baselining your system. You should still be able to hit 2.5ghz with that setup. You will end up with mhz on the ram being about 210, make sure it is good there at the timings you have chose.

I used 2-3-3-6, 2T timings on the ram.

blckgrffn,

what other settings you want use to bump up the FSB?

I assume for the final overclock, not to test any other components.. Also, I didnt know that you had to creep up the settings, not just find the medium and set it..ill try that..

Make sure Cool 'N Quiet is disabled in the BIOS. Also very important, make sure your PCI bus is locked. Usually that isn't a specific setting in BIOSes, some do it for you by default if you overclock, but for others, it requires setting the PCI core +1 to 67 (as opposed to default of 66).

I pulled my hair out for a full month when I put my first A64 rig together in June, my problem was the 133 mem divider, stick with the 166 like you are doing.

Ok so I tried again...

Yes C'nQ is OFF and disabled

Got up to 2250 Mhz ( 225 x 10)
HT: 3x
Mem: 2.5-4-4-8 (187.5 Mhz) set @ 166
CPU volts: 1.57
DIMM volts: 2.9

I cant go past 225 on the FSB, wont post.... Ive tried lowering the multi to 9 or 8, but once I raise the FSB, it wont post..

Here's the funny thing tho, If i put the memory @ 100Mhz, I can push the FSB all the way to 270, but isnt my memory sucking at that rate??

Is my memory causing this issue>?

Any ideas?

2.9v is pretty high for any mem speed below stock (200). Mine hits its max (229) at stock vcore. Download motherboard monitor and take a look at your rails, maybe it's a PSU issue.

Your problems seem identical to mine when I was trying to use the 133 mem divider. Maybe the Epox has similar issues with the 166.

Make sure the locks are working by downloading clockgen, it shows your PCI and PCIe bus speeds, they should stay at 33.33mhz and 100mhz regardless of you HTT setting.

It sounds like you may have gotten some corruption in windows when you crashed the first time. Try doing a fresh install of windows and start over.

Did you try different bios versions? I had similar issues with Ballistix DDR500 and A8N-SLI Deluxe. Using any mem divider (2/3, 5/6) system froze or won't post when memory was reaching 190~200.

Seems like your case, because if you use 1/2 divider you can take your HTT to 270. With 1/2 divider I could also go way up to 290 HTT.

In any case, it looks like a bios issue - mobo & mem. Can you try different memory?

Yea, I pulled out 2 of the 512 sticks. I now have 2 x 512 Cosair XMS 2-3-3-6 1T

This seemed to work better, I could get the machine to post all the way up to 2.7 with 10x multi and 3x HT, mem @ 166 (2-3-3-6, 1T). However, while pushing it that far, I neglected to see even it would load Windows at that speed, which it would not. I lowered the speed, and it still would not load windows at all, would get BSOD after the windows logo. The only way to get it to recover was to clear the CMOS jumper and I had to sometimes resore to the day before.

Anyways, I finally made some headway. This weekend Ill put a fresh install of windows and try to get it stable around 2.55 or 2.6 (hopefully)

Would those timings give me BSOD while windows loads? Can you tell me specifically which setting to loosen please? Ill try that when I get home.

Question tho: It seems I cant OC very well with 4x512 stick of memory, so is 25% faster cpu speed worth losing 1 GiG of memory?

Just use a lower memory divider. This way you'll get both the higher cpu speed (if your cpu can actually do it) and the 2GB of ram.
