I just received a HP omnibook 500 laptop, 700mhz, blah, blah, blah.

Anyways, it is from an AT member who makes me extremely mad. It has windows 98 installed on it and the audio driver and the network driver is non existent. It came to me this way. The problem with this laptop is that it requires a docking station for a cdrom, floppy, etc. and I did not get one. I was planning on taking this laptop with me on vacation tomorrow morning and listening to mp3's in the car and surfing AT in the motel rooms with a lan jack.

Anyone know where network card drivers are stored on windows 98 as windows 98 cannot find the driver when searching. It sure would be nice to just download a driver but I can't get it into the freakin laptop.

One more rant. You cannot ship a laptop in a fedex box. I'm talking about the ones that a video card in a retail box would fit in. A member on this forum to remain nameless for now wrapped the laptop in 3 layers of bubble wrap, not big bubbles, but very small bubbles. He used packing to keep the laptop from going end to end in the box but a laptop does not belong in a box of this type. The laptop should have been inside of a plastic bag to protect it also. The trader also said there was a 20 gig hard drive but there is only a 10 gig. It seems to work fine except for the fact I can't put my mp3's or upgrade it windows 2000 because of the whole network fiasco. I bought a laptop for nothing basically now. Makes me mad!!!:disgust::|:disgust:

drivers are compressed in the cabs files as far as i know. do u have a ext zip drive? that might be of help to u. if not... u could try direct serial connection (null modem).

I don't think your probably going to find a driver in Win98 for those parts (maybe, but not likely). If you don't mind finding a cable tomorrow (might even have one if you have a random supply of parts, I do) is a parallel - parallel or serial - serial port and then you can use Direct Cable Connection to transfer files over.

Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Windows Setup Tab > Communications > Direct Cable Connection (check the box). If you don't have another 98 machine handy you might have some issues, not sure.

I hope you have CAB files on the hard drive.

Need to get your money back...:(

Return it and demand your monies back. Deals like that shouldn't be allowed here otherwise he/she will just scam the next person. :|

If you didn't get what you were promised, then you've got yourself a valid grievance. Communication'll be the key outta this

It depends on who installed windows. On my pc. it's c:\win98, I copied the cabs from the install disk. Dell does this into the options/cabs. I don't know about hp. But there should be a drop down box when you are browsing for drivers during installation with a list of the most recently used folders. If you're lucky, the directory for the cab files will be one of those choices. If you are unlucky, that directory will be preceded by D:\ . Good Luck.

It's very possible that Win98 doesn't have drivers built-in for that laptop's NIC. So there's no CD-ROM or floppy? Your only option then is to use a null modem cable (already suggested) or, better yet a male/male parallel cable and do a Direct Cable Connection with your desktop computer, download the NIC driver from HPs site and transfer it via parallel cable to the laptop. Of course it's not exactly a common cable to have lying around, so you might need to make a trip to Office Depot or CompUSA or something to pick one up.

If it went down like you said it did, then it sounds like you got a bum deal, and the seller should either refund your money in full or in part, depending on whether you want to keep the laptop or not.

Good luck
