*Help* New System (3500+ Venice) CPU Idling at 50C

After months of reading around on this forum and slowly purchasing the parts for my new system, I finally put it together 2 nights ago. I haven't had a lot of time to work on it since I've been busy at work, but I've managed to get it running WinXP pro SP1a fine. The computer, as far as I know, has been running stable; but I haven't ran any load test or benchmarks on it yet.

My issue is that my cpu seems to be idling at 50C, which is kinda hot. Right when I turn on my computer, its' already at 48C; which doesn't make any sense to me. Is it possible for the CPU temperature sensor on my mobo to be faulty?

Any other possible explanation would also be appreciated.

you could have a dodgy BIOS giving incorrect read outs, and i think the Jetway motherboards have bad BIOS support as well ..

are you using stock heatsink fan? .. and are you sure that you correctly installed it to make sure for proper contact with the thermal paste, and heatsink itself

your idle should be about 34 ish and load at a max of 44 ish

Yes I am using the stock heatsink/fan. I've tried to reseat the heatsink and it looked like the thermal pad had properly "melted?" over the cpu.

Other than buying a better heatsink/fan and thermal paste, is there any other ways for me to determine whether my cpu running too hot or not? I've felt the heatsink while the computer was idling and it didn't feel very hot.

have you tried to update the BIOS from their official website, as motherboards do not always come with the latest BIOS installed. For example my motherboard took until BIOS rev 1.8 from the original 1.2 to actually report the temps correctly .. also maybe try and use speedfan (download its freeware) this might show you a more accurate temp reading, although it might actually read it from the BIOS, anyway but i am not sure on that, just try it out ;).

if everything is stock and you are sure that you have seated the heatsink properly, (which is quite hard not to with the stock one) then i would say dont worry and leave it down to a bad temp diode (this is apparent in some motherboards and is not uncommon, abit for example :p)

Thanks for the advice; I downloaded speedfan and will install it when I get home from work to check.

True .. but he stated that he was idling to high "50 degrees" which for idle is way to high (especially for a stock 3500+), he could use C&Q but that wont solve the problem, and as a result he will have a reduced frequency aka loss of performance, as it should idle a lot lower than that ;)
