Hello everyone! Thanks for reading this post hopefully someone can shed some light on this weird problem.

Ok the build..

i5-750
Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H ( http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products...board&ProductID=3309&ProductName=GA-H55M-UD2H )
OCZ Obsidian 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
700 watt raidmax psu
normal sata dvd burner / 1tb hdd

Ok the problem is when it powers on all the fans spin up and everything looks good. But it never posts or beeps or... does anything... just sits there. No video no beeps nothing.

After some research i found that this motherboard only supports onboard video when you have a CPU that has integrated graphics on the chip. The i5-750 does NOT have this feature... so my question is would that be causing the system to not post at all? Or do we have a funk motherboard?

Three things it comes down to in my eyes

1) possibly bad motherboard
2) Needs video card to POST
3) PSU may be crap

*note i tried booting the system with 1 stick of ram, no ram, each dimm, both dimms etc... etc..

I also tested the motherboard outside of the case for shorts that would cause it not to post

All said and done i've tried nearly everything in my playbook and it still... wont... post

TIA
-GP

Have you checked all case connectors to make sure they are properly oriented with respect to pin one? Do not rely on the labels, look for the embossed triangle.

Have you reset the BIOS?

Have you tried both display ports?

I realize i need a vid card. however what i need to know if this would cause the system to not even post...

Because if not and it should post regardless then i have another problem.

OK, you said it. Your CPU is not a Clarkdale, so it doesn't have video. Card needed.

I read up on this because I couldn't believe that not having on die graphics meant you couldn't use the onboard video chip. You're absolutely right. As an occasional system builder for elderly folks, I was glad to learn this. Another reason to continue recommending AMD solutions. :)

Does anyone know if this would cause the system to not POST at all? I need to narrow down my problem before i spring for an expensive vid card.

fairly certain it's the lack of video card. don't even have a pci card laying around to test?

what happened to the 5770?

I will try the 5770 soon, the rig is not available right now to test with.

Lets hope it posts with a vid card...

I have that same MB with an i3-530, using the IGP. It has been dead stone reliable since day one.

It would seem to need a VGA card, but any card should do, not necessarily a 5770. Curious why you chose a H55 MB for a i5-750 and not a P55 MB?

Hope you get this solved.

So, you're faulting Intel for producing a chipset for a specific cpu and NOT the OP for doing no research prior to buying incompatible parts? LOL! And the fact that the OP bought a Raidmax power supply should have been a clue.

heh that's funny. you probably clicked this thread in the mood to offer some advice and then your post just kind of soured into a double insult.

but yeah if you are going to buy your parts without doing any research or posting on AT, this kind of thing is going to happen with almost every build. and here's another tip for your playbook. you need video in order to POST no matter what kind of machine it is.

I'm not certain that it requires a video card, because it's possible to build a "headless" server box. But if you have a PC speaker (or the mini one that passes for a speaker), then you should hear some sort of beeps (errors due to no video card), or a single beep (sucessful POST). The fact that you don't seems to indicate some sort of malfunction.

I have no problem with Intel building whatever they like. I do have a problem with Intel and MB manufs. making that little tidbit of info hard to find.

I do recommend people do the research before building however, I also understand the point of view that they (end users) don't really care about the nuts and bolts, they just want it to work.

No need to be assholes people... I built this rig for a friend (hence he didnt want to spend 100~ on a PSU) I did do my research but missed this little tid bit.

I hastily ordered the parts thinking ALL i5s had integrated on chip graphics... this chip did not.

Anyways i keep pounding the issue because im not even getting beeps... just cold black screen.

Dont most MB default to stop on all errors in bios,no card would be a error.
GA-H55M-UD2H specs. Intel HD Graphics integrated with the processor.

How can you tell if it doesn't post if you have no videocard or speaker?

You definately need a videocard to get something to look at :)

As mentioned, the video ports on the motherboard are dead without a gpu on the chip. Get a card and you should be fine.

You can see the onboard video on the back of the motherboard - there will be a digital video port or there will not be. More specifically, with Intel, the H55 and H57 chip sets are the line that features onboard graphics. Intel took a step in the right direction but this tech is not yet mature. I see it as something that will be potent in the future, however.

You should try a video card. Without a video card it will not display anything on the monitor.

I never thought about this situation but it makes since. If the video card is on chip, yet provided via ports on mobo, you would still need the vid chip to provide video. Very weird should be huge disclaimer when buying such a design. I guess its more on the mobo.

I mean until this gen of intels, any time you saw a vga port on a mobo you assumed it has video without video card.

I didn't see it mentioned so I have to ask, did you plug in a system speaker? You won't hear any beeps without one. And a common misperception - helped along because this is often called a case speaker - is that you can plug you case's speakers or other computer speakers in and get sound through one of those devices. This isn't true. You need something like this: http://www.cwc-group.com/casp.html

When it doesn't post it's usually the memory. Try different slots.

Doesn't "headless" usually imply no monitor/KB/mouse hooked up?

I do think you can run w/o a graphics card, but you first have to get into BIOS (which does require a graphics card) and set it to not halt on errors.
