HELP! Networking XP pro to a w2k pro using cat5 crossover only

I'm trying to network a PC running XP pro to a laptop running win 2000 pro using a crossover cat5 cable from NIC to NIC

they exchange info according to the "local area connection"

neither machine sees the other when I do a search. I have similar IP's set up, and they are in the same workgroup.

I see no reason that this shouldn't work, but it doesn't. I'm sure it's some stupid firewall setting or something with xp.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure the firewall is off in XP

Computer Ip's are on same subnet right?

I actually talked to a guy a while back on yahoo who said he'd been in networking for about 7 years.....he set up the same configs I had...and couldn't make it work either.

I really think it's just some stupid little detail!!

The XP machine can see itself in teh network neighborhood and search....w2k can't see anything

Right click Lan connection, click properties, click advanced and make sure box is unchecked!

XP firewall was off. Here's what's happening....maybe someone can make some sense of this and offer a solution.

as far as IP settings, I have both machines detecting automatically!?!?!

In my local area connection status, it shows connected at 100Mbps
under activity though, on the w2k pro laptop it has lots of info both sent and rec'd
but on the XP pro PC it shows info sent, but not rec'd (0 packets rec'd)

Can anyone make any sense of that??

To set Sharing between your computers.

Important For the purpose of the initial setting, disable all software Firewall (including WinXP native
ICF); disable any active Virus scan or any other utility that might intercept Network Traffic.

If you are not concern about internal security WinXP has a fast simple method of sharing, no user permissions and no passwords.

Windows XP Simple File Sharing

WinXP Pro has an additional more secure method:

Windows XP Professional File Sharing.

XP File Sharing Trouble

What do u mean detecting autmatically? Do u mean obtain Ip automaticaly? If so that aint gonna work as u dont have a dhcp sever to give u an IP.
U have to mannualy assign each PC an IP addy on the same subnet.

You shouldn't be able to ping anything if you have them set to obtain IP automatically since neither of them even have an IP address to ping to.

Just set the IP address to 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 with subnets of 255.255.255.0 and you should be good. Also, see if both machines have a shared folder. Sometimes machines don't show up in network neighborhood until you have something shared out.

I have similar IP's and same subnet.

I'm starting to think there's something wrong with the Xover cable:

XP can ping 2k, but not vice versa

Both machines see themselves on the network...but neither sees the other

Both have all drives shared

I'm VERY FRUSTRATED

Anyone know how to tell if it is the cable b4 I go out and buy another???

Any other troubleshooting suggestions??

EDIT: Both have similar IP's and same subnet....using ip's 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 w/ subnet 255.255.255.0

Assuming that your User and Sharing settings are OK (if not, look again at the links that I posted previously).

Put NetBEUI on and bind it to file sharing. Since there is nothing to set on NetBEUI it will be easy to isolate the problem (It does not take more then few minutes to put it on or to remove it after).

If your concerned about your cable only traveling 1-way try reversing the cable. that will show you quick enough

So, what you're saying is to use NETBEUI for the LAN, but beyond the lan use TCP/IP??

I've read a little on the internet on NETBEUI and it sounds like a good tool, however obviously I'm not an experienced networker...so I don't know much about it...and how to set it up to do what you're saying.

also, I don't have the OS CD for my w2k machine...my laptop is from the CO I work for, and they didn't gimme the CD for it.

The networking components installed on each machine are:

Client For Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for MS Networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

maybe I'm missing something here!?!?!?! but I would think for a simple LAN like this I wouldn't need anything else....except perhaps NETBEUI???

Any help would be appreciated.....also, thank you all for your help so far.

BREAKTHROUGH!!!

I can access XP files from my w2k machine. However, I cannot find the 2k machine in a search for other computers on the XP machine.

Pinging is successful both ways, and I get very fast file transfer rates when swapping files either way...but I'm just unable to find the 2k machine from XP....The 2k machine has BlackICE firewall on it...but even when disabled I can't find it in a search.

ANY IDEAS??

The black ice is your problem!
I could have told u that (as well as everyone else here) in the beginning of the thread if u mentioned that!!!

Why are u searching for tha machine? Why arent u browsing the workgroup?

EVEN WHEN BlackICE is disabled, I can't access the 2k machine though....so that doesn't seem to be the problem!!!!!

As for searching, it's basically the same thing as looking through the workgroup...only faster....if I can't find it in a search, it's not gonna show up in workgroup!?!?

EDIT: I see what the problem is (or so I think): my laptop has Norton Corporate Edition on it....apparently my company set it up so that I can't disable it, or change anything on it at all!!! It's running in the background, and I didn't even know it was running until I went into task manager. I dont' believe there's anything I'm gonna be able to do about it either!! In the options menus everything is greyed out, allowing NO changes!!

Sorry I didn't mention the BlackICE sooner...but once JackMDS mentioned firewalls being disabled, I disabled it...and still can't find the 2k from XP.
