here is what i am trying to accomplish:
secured network with wired and wireless, also accessible by pocketPC. pc's should be able to see each other. use the router as a firewall and enable an ftp server to be run on one of the pc's

what i have to work with:
cable modem
dlink 614+ wireless router
2 wired pc's all with winXP pro
1 wireless pc winXP pro w/dlink pci adapter
e755 pda [built-in wireless]

so far i've mananged to run the dlink network wizard, and enabled 128bit encryption. confident that i can do what is required, just need a guide to get me going.

I would suggest leaving the Wizard ?Dormant? Network Wizards are usually y on the Dark Side of the Force.

It is much better to invest a little time and learn to configure manually.

May be this can Help.

What level of security are you looking for? I really wouldn't consider enabling WEP as secure if it is for the enterprise. If home and you really don't care if it is actually secure, then fine, but if you want secure as in actually secure, then don't bet the farm on it.

being a home network i want secure enough so that credit card number don't get picked off and nobody freeloads of the network

Get the wireless link working without encryption first, and then enable WEP on both sides with the same key. I find that starting with encryption right out of the box sometimes makes the initial configuration more difficult.

Once you get it working, you can apply some of the security changes, stop broadcasting SSID, filter on MAC address, and add WEP.

I agree with gunrunnerjohn.

First get all the computers connected without WEP enabled and make sure you can do everything you expect. Considering this will be basic setup, it should be relatively easy.

Then add the WEP and make sure everything still works. The challenge here will be the PPC... Not that its impossible to configure, its just not the simpliest.

Then you can work on stuff like non-broadcasting the ssid, etc.

Anybody care to post some good links regarding the more advanced things like hidding the ssid, etc.
