Hey all,

I just got a SMC 802.11b Wireless PC Card (Model: SMC2635W) and installed it into my laptop. I have a Netgear MR814v2 Wireless router and got the SMC to link up to the Netgear Router. Everything works fine until 5-10mins. Then my Netgear Router just locks up! Both the Wireless and LAN ports just freeze. I can't even connect to the administration page on the router (either through the LAN or Wireless). My router only freezes when I use this SMC Wireless card. If I plug a Xircom 10/100 LAN wired card into the laptop (how I connected before), everything works fine.

Does anyone know how I can solve this problem??? I am using WEP. I tried setting the SMC card to 5.5mb/sec but the problem still occurs. Can it be the WEP key causing the problem? I can't see how it can be the problem because within that 5 minutes I can surf the web and everything. Its just for some reason the Netgear Router just locks up after 5-10min when using this SMC Wireless card.

What I've tried already:
-installing new SMC Wireless Card Driver
-throttling back the SMC card from 11mb/sec to 5.5mb/sec
-changing my SSID channel

The Laptop I'm installing the SMC Wireless Card on:

Dell PII-500Mhz
WinXP Pro
256MB RAM

It's pretty amazing that a wireless device can kill the router, I sure have never seen that before! I think I'll avoid the Netgear routers!

Have you checked for a firmware upgrade for the router, this sounds like an obvious issue that should be addressed by Netgear.

yea, firmware update and try it without wep and see what happens.... If I had to guess at one of the two to blame, I'd pick the cheapo SMC, but you need to test both individually to be sure

Gee, I'm afraid I have to disagree.

There is nothing the SMC wireless card can do that should lock up the router! IMO, this clearly a router problem. I'm also curious as to the origin of the "cheapo SMC" comment, they enjoy at least as good a reputation as Netgear.

The Intel Wireless NIC in my Dell 600m causes my SMC 2562W Access Point to lock up as soon as I try to associate...its like clockwork.

Well, I'd have to lay the blame on the SMC router in your case. Does anyone believe that you should be able to kill a router by saying the wrong thing to it via a wireless connection? I sure don't believe that should happen!
