OMG. I just walk in our Computer room and found my 10 yr old looking a PRON, The kid next door came over (13yrs old) and showed my child a part on the web I didnt want him to know about, YET. We all have our own computers and before I just PW lock his and only let him play on it while supervised I was wondering if any other parents have had to deal with filtering and if it works and what is my best choice in doing it.

TIA

Charlie

if your kid doesnt know about the preferences option in google, go there an choose "Use strict filtering (Filter both explicit text and explicit images)"

Set the google option to strict. Thanks Never knew that was there. :)

I dont really want to wild card filter with the router, I am looking for a way to just filter his machine, Freeware would be great or some setting in windows.

If I have to buy a prog. then I would like to hear what others use that is good

Norton Internet Security has a Parental Control module, you might read up on it at www.symantec.com and see if that's the type of thing you're after. But if it were me, I would 1) talk to the parents of the other kid, just in case they actually care that their kid is doing this; and 2) keep that kid from being alone with your kid (I work with people who counsel SRY/SAY's and that suggestion is for real).

1)Already called the parents and waiting for a call back

2)That child is not allowed to play or be near mine again

Using cybersitter trial I have been trying to fool it most of the night seems pretty stout and logs all questionable activity. I think I can only allow what sites I want him to be able to go to, which would be great. Thanks for the help yall

Make him a limited user account in Windows, and configure the Internet Explorer content advisor.

People either forget, or don't seem to realize Windows comes with the tools necessary to limit a user's access to just about anything. All the add-ons you buy and crap like that attempt to secure an administrator account, which is a bit rediculous.

A little exploration is good. :D
Just kidding. Porn on the internet is out of control hardcore and isn't suitable for any kid.

How much access do you want your child to have to the internet in general ?

The only thing that will work 100% is restricting access at a firewall level based on an inclusions list. Urls like geocities.com/~joeuser/pic2555.jpg could as easily be illegal hardcore pornography as pictures of some guy's new car, and are not subject to any conceivable form of 'netnanny' type software.

FYI an inclusions list means that all sites are blocked by default, except for ones which you specify. This method is foolproof, though either high maintenance or exceptionally restrictive depending on your approach.

Do you use a router ? It may well have the settings to meet your requirements without having to get anything additional.

The sad fact is porn made the internet, keeps it alive, and will continue to until they make the brain implants with porn in them.. :D

where there's a will.. there's a way. my dad caught me looking at porn.. at first he yelled at me, but did that stop me? nope.. so he put on a program to monitor and block sites, but i figured out a way to disable the program.. then he locked the computer down and put a password on the bios.. so i popped out the cmos memory battery.

so what could he have done to prevent me from looking at porn? absolutely nothing.. it's inevitable that your son will look at porn.. and eventually he'll have sex. you can try and take measures to make it harder for him, but i wouldn't expect it to stop him.. what you should do is talk to him about it. let him know that what he's feeling is normal and that there's a right and wrong way to look at women. your job is to provide for ur kid and to guide him as he grows up, and not control how he grows up.. you've gotta teach him about life and not avoid the topics that may make you uncomfortable. the more open your relationship is with him, the more influence you'll have in his life.
that doesn't mean that you should let him look at porn freely though.. you've still gotta impose some authority.

The kid is 10. Use your goddamn brain.

Would you want your 10 year old kid looking at some messed up stuff, maybe scat, or bukkake, or beastiality?

if my kid was lookin at that kinda sht, i'd send him to a shrink.
worry more about the influence that the kinda sht he sees will have on him rather than being silent.. don't condone his actions and don't make it easy for him to get it, but don't be ignorant and think that he won't find some other source for porn.. at least make sure that it won't have a bad influence on him.

if all he watches are fake rape videos.. and years later he gets arrested for raping some girl, where do you think the blame would lie?
