Help Needed Setting Up Printer For Linux

How can I find out whether my printer has been detected? If not, how do I configure it. Distro - RedHat 7.2. Printer - HP 842C. I am using Gnome and don't know exactly what difference that would make if any. Lots of details, please. TIA.
