🙁

A friend has a problem that I can't figure out.

He downloaded MS updates and shut off his computer. When he tried to restart nothing would happen. The fans come on, the monitor light flashes, no keyboard lights, and 1 long beep followed by 2 short beeps, then some other strange noises.

I checked out the beep codes and what I found was possible video card. Not sure about the other noises though.

Am I on the right track here? Is there someway I can make sure?

Thanks.

The fact that it happend after an MS update is probably a coincidence. Maybe he kicked the system unit by mistake if it was floorstanding? (Although I frequently kick my systems intentionally 😀).

Re-seat (i.e. fully remove, then fit once again) the video card and see what happens. If nothing new happens, it's possible that the video adapter has decided to call it a day.

1) Try reseating boards and cables as Magicthyse suggested.
2) If the video card is PCI try a different slot.
3) Try using a different video card.

while u're reseating the video card... it might not be such a bad idea to reseat the ram too. if u still get the same beep codes, try another video card.
