Hey guys,

I'm kinda new here so give me a hand here! have you guys had any problems installing linux on the new AMD Athlon/Duron processors? Cuz i started installing linux and after it finishes instaling, it says kernel panic! it also says "In swapper task - not syncing." have you guys had any problems like this? it was installed on the new AMD Duron 900 Mhz processor with the Epox motherboard with KT133 chipset! i installed in on a new 30 gig hard drive! Give me some tips on this!

Try 2.4. It has much more up to date drivers, and will handle the hardware better.

Yeah, had the same problems.
Recompiling your kernel for i386 could help I think.

Upgrading to Kernel 2.4 solved it for me.

I dont have any problems, i think kernel panic is not caused by Duron/T-bird processor
but you can try upgrading your kernel, 2.4.5 especially

I personally dont think it was the processors fault specifically, but possibly an unsupported chipset and things that go along with that.

Well I know from personall expirience that the kernel supplied by RH with 6.2
won't run on Duron/Athlon with thunderbird core...something to do with the MTRR
registers and the cpuid!

Check this out!!

I advise you to recompile the kernel as soon as possible, and don't use
those intel features!!

That kernel panic is caused by kernel not identifying processor right. RH 6.2 comes with 2.2.14 kernel which is way older than Athlon/Duron processors. Kernel thinks that Athlon/Duron is P3 processor and tries to disable it's spy features (infamous serial number). But, since Athlon/Duron doesn't have inner serial number, kernel panic occures.
